BANGKOK — The Bank of Thailand on Tuesday released images of new banknotes to enter circulation nationwide on King Rama X’s birthday.

The 500 baht and 1,000 baht bills will begin circulating July 28, which marks King Vajiralongkorn’s birthday.

Why not 10 000 baht bills?

I was at the bank a few weeks ago and next to me a guy gets helped by the lovely lady behind the country; after his transaction he get 300 baht in return, 3 old style banknotes, and all of a sudden the lady behind the counter pulls out a brand new 100 bill, and asks if he would prefer that one. The guy takes the new bill, looks at the front and back, and hands it back with a "mai pen rai".

I happen to be in the numismatic business of collecting coins and banknotes and i must say that Thailand is one of the very few countries in the world that print and mint so many new coins and banknotes like every few months there are new editions of coins and banknotes coming out on the market...

The fatal flaw with these new bills is that both sides of the new bills do not have the value (i.e., 20, 50,100, 500, 1000) printed in the upper right corner. Thus it's difficult to read the bills' value when in a wallet or a folded wad. This is a very poor design, and when many millions of people start using these bills, there's bound to be many mistakes.

Great design, Thailand.
