The highs and lows of motorcycle racing hit home to Kiwis yesterday when TT legend Bruce Anstey won the Lightweight event in a comeback from a long run battling cancer

 

Tragically, however, fellow Kiwi, Chris Swallow, was killed in a crash at the Ballaugh Bridge during the Senior event.  It was his 12th year at the TT.  RIP.

Not wanting to be the party pooper, nor the bloke with a lack of humour....

...however,

normally the passenger would be leaning out, not in, on that corner, to keep the chair down, thats when i noticed the bike leant over, and not the sidecar.

The bike moves, but the chair does not.

So it's some newfangled health & safety, take-all-the-fun-out-of-sidecars invention.

Don't like it.

Huge fan of proper motorcycles with proper sidecars.

I had an 8 stud iron head, unit 650 (figure that one out - Triumph buffs) bored out to 686cc, in a 4" over rigid frame with a rigid wheeled sidecar for many years as a rat runabout, winter hack, shop jobsworthy.

So, the only suspension was the front end, a stock length disc T140.

That bike, due to the rigid back end & sidecar wheel, was probably the fastest thing on the road when it came to wet, greasy roundabouts. You could go round in 2nd or 3rd gear, all on the throttle, like a speedway bike, with the bike going round at a 45 degree angle, rear wheel spinning like mad, engine revving at 5k, overtaking everything, much to the shock & horror of other drivers, riders.

Fantastic fun.

Used to take my Dobie dog to and fro to work in it too, he loved it, and we became a common popular sight on that road over the years.

Also undertaking cars in inner city single lane roads, by putting the sidecar up, and, onto the pavement would be a good party trick - freaked the unwary passenger out... And the pedestrians...

I'll have to a dig a photo out.

Love 'em or hate them .. this bike changed the face of biking 50 yrs ago .. 

Went on a school trip early 70's to Holland .. in the town we stayed for a few days there was a proper rock bar in the same street that we were all told to stay away from ( we were all 13/14 yo ) .. One eve in the half hour we had before curfew me and a buddy ventured down there to see 2 bro's with leather jackets , long hair and beards blast away on a red CB750 fitted with dropped bars .. No lids and as they pulled away the door of the bar opened with Deep Purple's " Speedking " emanating from within .. Ahh them was the dayz ..

Thaiguzzi , the independently leaning sidecar reminded me of the "Sidewinder" teatray sidecar , although that leaned with the bike. When was that , mid eighties ?.

Ariel square 4 racer .. Not one of our finest engines .. As far as I know that is an early one but I'm not bang sure on that .. 

2 square 4's in a car of some sort but that is the only pic' I've got so don't know what sort ..

Yeah, think so.

Hideous contraptions as well.

Can't remember exactly, think it was something to do with the 250 learner L plate laws, or being able to ride a bigger cc bike with sidecar whilst still on L plates, or for car drivers to ride a bike without a test or summink equally daft & similar.

Basically it was a dodge, get round existing laws thing, just like Reliant 3 wheelers were.

All of 'em ; pretty <deleted>ty inventions for lazy cheaters who either could'nt drive a proper car or ride a proper motorcycle.

God, i wish i had bought one of these for the shop 25 years ago when prices were still sensible compared to nowadays.
