Scarlett Johansson has followed up her controversial role in Ghost in the Shell — which drew whitewashing complaints — with yet another divisive part, and she's even working with the same director.

Johansson and director Rupert Sanders are to team up for Rub & Tug, Deadline is reporting, a movie based on the "fact-based story" of a transgender massage parlour owner, Dante 'Tex' Gill.

Johansson's casting in the role has been met with fierce criticism by some on social media, with many baffled as to how Scarlett and Sanders have essentially repeated the same issues that plagued Ghost in the Shell.

A spokesperson for the actress has since hit back at criticism, telling Bustle that the complaints aimed at Scarlett should be directed elsewhere.

Are they really going to call it "Rub and Tug"?

I can't see what the fuss is about. Scarlett will be acting the part of a woman who acted like a man. An actress playing the part of another (admittedly less visually beguiling) actress sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
