Best currency to transfer

I periodically transfer USD funds from my USA bank to Krung Thai Bank here in Thailand. I am always asked if I want the transfer in USD or Thai baht? Which provides the most?

Can’t speak to Krung Thai but at Bangkok Bank, USD transfers always give you more baht.

The exchange rate used by banks in the states is typically less that what you would get here by transferring the funds in dollars plus some banks might charge a fee for changing it to baht before doing the transfer.

Always transfer onshore never offshore

 

So in your case transfer USD to be converted at better rates onshore in Thailand

OP, 

  I'm assuming it's your Sending bank that asks the question whether you want to send in dollars or baht?   Well, that is their sneaky way of hopefully getting you to think/say, "Yes, send in baht as that is what must be deposited to my Thai bank account anywhere....baht is what I need....that's the money used in Thailand."   

 

   When you say send baht/authorize the Sending bank to send baht instead of dollars you have authorized the bank to convert your dollars to baht "at their exchange rate which will be approx 2-6% lower than the Thai bank will give to convert your incoming dollars."    That lower 2-6% exchange rate is pure profit for your Sending bank at your expense.

 

    Always, repeat, always send dollars....do not let authorize the Sending bank to convert to and send baht.   Ditto if you are here in the Thailand, stick your U.S. debit card in a ATM, and screen appears offering you a specific currency exchange rate/saying they will convert to your home currency.  That is a Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) transaction and the exchange rate they are offering will be around 3% lower than the full Visa/Mastercard exchange rate.  Read the screen wording closely and press whatever button that does not accept the DCC offer, allows you to Continue On to get the card network (Visa/Mastercard) rate.  Ditto if using your card to pay for a purchase....if you see a dollar and baht amount on the receipt for signature that is a DCC transaction....do not sign....tell them to cancel that transaction and charge in Thai baht; not U.S. dollars....only takes them a minute or two to cancel the DCC transaction and rerun in baht.     

 

   Letting a Sending bank convert your dollars to baht or accepting a DCC transaction at an ATM or purchase check out counter is more profit for the bank/merchant at your expense.
