More than 2,000 luxury timber saplings have been planted around the Angkor complex in Siem Reap province to increase forest cover and improve the temple environment. The Apsara Authority, along with private sector bodies such as the Siem Reap Human Resource Association and the Siem Reap Tourism Association, took part in the planting on Saturday. Yet Sovat, director of the authority’s forest management department, said 2,170 precious and rare saplings were planted near the east of Ta Prohm temple, with 50 hotels and a tourism company taking part in the program.

He said 1,504 neang nuon trees, 275 beng trees and 391 kranhoung trees were planted. These were luxury timbers in Cambodia, and rare in the Angkor area. “The trees will grow well for about seven to ten years in the good environment and care of the forest staff in the Angkor area,” Mr Sovat said. “They will create a better environment and the next generation will get to know these luxury timbers.” “Forest staff, apart from taking care of the temple, will pay close attention to protecting the environment around the temple,” he added.
