A 32-year-old Thai man with a prolonged history of drug abuse locked his 52-year-old wife up inside their home before setting it on fire and fleeing the scene on Sunday morning but neighbours acted in time and came to her rescue.

The fire at around 11am was put out in 20 minutes by fire-fighters. The blaze gutted the bedroom and furniture.

Police are now looking for the suspect, Moon Nantabon, who is reportedly unemployed and allegedly often beat up his wife, Wisut Mekpayom. He reportedly damaged things when he could not get cash from her to buy drugs.

A police probe found that prior to the fire, Moon reportedly threatened his wife to give him cash for drugs. As she was sick, he tied her up in a storage room, locked the door from outside, and set the bedroom on fire.

After the man fled, the woman smelled something burning and heard people outside shouting that the house was on fire. She screamed for help and got rescued in time.

Neighbors told police that Moon had been abusing methamphetamine for more than a decade and often assaulted his own mother until she also fled and urged police to imprison him or send him for drug rehabilitation as leaving him in this state could cause harm to others.
