Finally the perfect "policeman" is found - move over Ja Cheuy here comes Ja Wai!

Sanook went to town on a story after they found what appeared to be a tireless traffic policeman doing his duty in the Thai countryside directing cars and bikes away from danger.

But on closer inspection this was no real cop but was a version of the "Ja Cheuy" (inactive officer) - models looking like the constabulary used to scare motorists into obeying the law.

And it was in fact not a "model cop" at all - it seemed to be an official of the Department of Rural Roads.

Best of all it was anything but inactive - it was actually rigged up to solar power and was moving its arm.

Amid much laughter Sanook reporters who stumbled on the scene in Ban Phrabaht of Lampang interviewed the head of the roadside work gang Narin Chaiwongluang, 57.

Narin has christened his helper "Ja Wai" (the able officer) hailing it as a great help to his men.

He said it was the idea of someone high up in the Highways Department.

"It's great," he said, "And much better than a real person.

"He doesn't get tired and is doing his duty all day even in the extreme heat".

He added that motorists thinking it was a police checkpoint all slowed down worried about being arrested for speeding. Bikers without helmets also looked worried, he said.

Sanook said that 8 of the "Ja Wai" were now on duty in Chiang Mai and 13 had been made in total.

Thaivisa notes that "Ja Cheuy" - models of policemen - are a familiar sight in Thailand both in Bangkok and up country.

Sometimes they even carry radar guns though it is debatable if these are also fake or ever actually work - accusations that are not infrequently made about the RTP themselves.

Says a lot about the populace, when people probably take more notice of the cardboard cutouts than the actual force itself ! :giggle:

I would totally agree with this statement. He doesn't except bribes or eat much also! Perhaps the whole force could be replaced by these characters.

Maybe that's why the "so called PM"  left his cardboard cut out for reporters to talk to ?

He was that high, he was close to the source that powered the cop.

If they could power the real ones in a similar fashion, they could all be waving their arms around automatically while still asleep.

Apart from the devious ones I suppose, who might work out how to use it for an automated J. Arthur when the sun was strongest.

"Ja Wai" (the able officer) works, it's the thousands of (alleged) real life ones who don't. Seems they auto-gravitate to inactive mode. They just need a formal post the for their inactivity.

Also says a lot about the quality / capability / maturity of the folks who should be continuously developing police processes to world standards.

Great idea! Now how about replacing our parliamentarians with cardboard cut-outs, too? As I understand it, most of them are taking naps during parliamentary sessions and therefore already resemble cardboard dudes anyway.

I wonder what he was high on...... maybe something he confiscated from a drug runner!

How long before somebody runs it down?

Add a camera somewhere because it won't last long?  it will be run over soon!

I'm sure it works as well and as hard as the real ones do.

so one's playing hookie and getting paid...?

Surely a cut out of Big Joke would have been best suited for this.

Is that Big Joke's alter ego?

Give it a few weeks until the locals wise up and then start trashing it - What will be even better is when they think it is only a cardboard cutout and run down the real thing!

A dummy policeman? I don't believe it.☺️

This guy is probably the most proactive copper in Thailand.

send him to Singapore or London and he probably has more chance of bringing those well known fugitives back to answer their charges.

An over engineered salute

Of course it was.

Somchai will mow him down in the pickup

At least he is safe from hit and run!

I wonder if the cardboard cutout cop has a box on it for bribes?
