Hi,

I have a 3 month multi entry non-immigrant O visa based on marriage that expires Sept 12. I read somewhere that you need 30 days left on the visa in order to apply for the 12 month extension at chaengwattana? Is this correct?

If so, I guess applying tomorrow would mean not enough time... So my question is, can I apply tomorrow and do a visa run if necessary while waiting the outcome of my application, or should I do a quick visa run first then go and apply for the extension once I'm back?

You can do the extension during the last 45 days of your 90 day entry from the visa. You can do it up to the last day of the 90 days if you want to.

The visas expiration date means nothing when a applying for a extension of stay.

Okay thank you. Would I still need to do a visa run if the visa expires before I get the extension? Or do they give me a temporary extension pending the outcome? Sorry for so many questions!

I assume you mean the 90 day entry from your visa ending. Your visas expiration date means nothing once you in the country.

After your extension of stay application is accepted you will get a under consideration stamp with a report back date 30 days from that day. The under consideration stamp allows you stay in the country until your application is approved.

Yes that's what I meant. Excellent, thanks for clearing that up!

The validity of your Visa and the validity of your permission to stay are completely separate.

7. Please note that the period of visa validity is different from the period of stayVisa validity is the period during which a visa can be used to enter Thailand.  In general, the validity of a visa is 3 months, but in some cases, visas may be issued to be valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years.  The validity of a visa is granted with discretion by the Royal Thai Embassy or Royal Thai Consulate-General and is displayed on the visa sticker.

8. On the other hand, the period of stay is granted by an immigration officer upon arrival at the port of entry and in accordance with the type of visa.  For example, the period of stay for a transit visa is not exceeding 30 days, for a tourist visa is not exceeding 60 days and for a non-immigrant visa is not exceeding 90 days from the arrival date.  The period of stay granted by the immigration officer is displayed on the arrival stamp.

FYI... If your visa is valid until Sept 12th (enter before date) you could do a final visa run before that date to get a final 90 day stay. That would mean you wouldn’t need to apply for the extension of stay until Nov/Dec time, and give you more time, if needed, to prepare.
