Australia stands with Thailand to tackle climate change, says ambassador

AUSTRALIA HAS affirmed its decision to support Thailand and the rest of the global community to tackle climate change.

 

Patrick Suckling, Australia’s Ambassador for the Environment, said last Friday that Thailand and Australia were collaborating on ways to mitigate climate change and other environmental issues. Suckling was in Bangkok on a three-day visit to discuss the cooperation between the two nation on climate change and their approach to sustainability and broader environmental issues with Thai government agencies, the business sector and civil society organisations.

 

Suckling and his team met Natural Resources and Environment Minister General Surasak Karnjanarat, who said the problems of marine plastic debris and severe flooding and drought caused by the changing climate were the main discussion topics.

 

“Climate change makes pro-environment actions more important than ever, because communities across the world are facing threats and challenges of climate change. It is no different in Australia,” Suckling said.

 

“A big issue such as climate change is not something only one country can fix, but it has to be done through global actions. The Paris Agreement is a historic agreement where the world decided to come together to address the risks posed by climate change.”

 

He said they were collaborating with Thailand to support the country’s progress in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement. 

 

They were now working on the development of Greenhouse Gas Measurement Reporting and Verification system to enhance the accuracy of greenhouse gas emission measurements.

 

“We are also working with other partners from around the world, |from country-to-country levels to partnerships with international |organisations, to support their ability to build climate resilience and |help them pursue their greenhouse |gas reduction targets,” he said.

 

Suckling said these constructive exchanges can empower nations to improve their efforts to implement the Paris Agreement.

 

Under the greenhouse gas reduction targets in the Paris Agreement, Thailand has pledged to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emission by 25 per cent by 2030, while Australia has pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by up to 28 per cent by 2030.

Thailand has pledged to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emission by 25 per cent by 2030. Trusting pledges from a Thai government is like trusting a bar girl with all your savings. 

You can´t sit in an authority position and decide things, or make things happen and change, if you do not have a people that wants to follow rules.

Rules are just for other people.

Apart from a bunch of government officials running around the globe with all expenses paid flying business class, dine and wine staying in 5 star hotels and chauffeured around with limousins time after tims talking about this elusive 'climate change'  and what to do about it with so far nothing to show for...

ambassadors are mere figureheads, they dont affect anything

Such a waste of time, all talk and NO action. Just a load of hot air. Most Thais are not even aware of global warming, I used to hear the phrase mentioned quite a lot some 10 years ago, but hardly ever now. The fragile attention span has been used up, as it has on the late King's 'Sufficiency Economy'  that too is never mentioned nowadays.

They stopped using "Global Warming" because too many people were pointing out the flaws in the warming argument. Much easier to be be vague and say "Climate Change".

Most are not aware, there is an outside of Thailand.

These people are paid fat salaries to hypocritically lie through their teeth. Coal is one of Australia's largest export commodities with Japan, China, South Korea, India and the US as their largest customers. They preach this crap while reeling in the money from the stuff that produces these emissions

Perhaps Thais do not worry because they believe there is an atmospheric cone over them to insulate them for the discharges coming from the thousands of coal fired power stations in the surrounding countries.

But I believe,  that Industrial live stock farming around the world is the real

green house Gas bad boy in the bigger picture of it all. 

Tzzzzzz these guys don't even realise the local climate is annually changing from rain to dry season .

What a joke. The current Australian government collectively has a policy of not quite denying climate change but make it very difficult to implement sustainability initiatives. Paris Accord targets unlikely to be met, massive land clearing adjacent the Great Barrier Reef, low carbon initiatives scrapped and lack of support for renewable energy a just a few off the top of my head. Absolute Hippocrates.

When no "West" direction exists on the geographical compass for Thais, I would say most are not aware that anything exists West of Bangkok.

Imagine it. Members of this current administration, one of the most incompetent in recent history, making pledges about actions to be taken over the next 50 years. These guys do not have enough vision to plan for next month. My guess is that half of these members could not pass a test on basic science, much less understand the nuances of climate change.

You mean Thailand has been pressured by Australia. Very misleading article THAINESS.

And yet we (Australia) remain the worlds second highest per capita emitters of green house gases, and we make this statement with a country that has an entrenched elite with a massive stake in a national petroleum producer.  Seems a bit of a hollow statement without serious action.

It's easy to quote a reduction of 25% when you don't give/know what the greenhouse emissions are in Thailand

if figures were generated by some institution I wouldn't believe them!

Just one thing lacking? a functioning Police force ?

Could throw in a democratically elected government that speaks for the people as well, but probably gone to far already with the problem of no Police! ?

These Australians should shut up, go back to Australia and figure out what they are going to do to stop contributing to climate change. Ask China where it gets a huge portion of its climate changing raw products e.g coal, gas and iron ore ...... Australia.

As well as I fully understand what you are trying to say. The police will still be part of the people, right? If the people don´t follow laws and rules, the police in´t gonna do it either. That´s where we are.

Yes, I think the PM is denying that fact which is a sure sign it will happen. He needs the energy to fulfill his economic dreams like the Eastern Economic Corridor and countless high speed trains. 

Someone more cynical than me once said that if you ask coastal Thais about the issue of sea-level rise, they will nod wisely and tell you: "Yes, it has been rising all morning, but will go down again in the afternoon."

 

I attach no credence to this story. Well, not much, anyway.

Like that actually means anything.

"Suckling" . No the fact is no-one cares about Climate Change. Why don't they just call it some joint Environmental Projects? That's all it is. They always love to couch it as fighting climate-change or some such nonsense, as if floods and droughts are a new thing.  If anyone cared an iota about climate change, they'd limit the bureaucracy which must contribute millions of tons of hot air and CO₂ to the atmosphere. 

Everyone loves environmental projects if they make things cleaner and nicer, but if they just suck up loads of cash and grow the bureaucracy and make everything expensive....well, not so much.
