Crime buster Surachet Hakpan was quoted at the weekend as saying that crime among Nigerians in Thailand was on the rise again.

Despite his efforts in recent months in arresting illegal foreigners and many Africans, his job is far from done.

Yesterday he was presiding over the arrest of a Chilean national aged 64 who was arrested at the Airport Link station at Suvarnabhumi.

Maj Gen Surachet - deputy commissioner of the tourist police - said that reports of more than 100,000 baht in theft had come in from Thais and Chinese people at the airport.

The Chilean suspect was named as Both "Chong" and "Mr Meeranda" in the Sanook article.

Police said he was found with incriminating evidence like US dollars,Thai baht, a passport and Thai ID at the station. A search of his room in Pratunam, Bangkok, turned up more.

He admitted to four thefts. He said he chose easy pickings when his victims were distracted.

He claimed to have lost all his money after gambling at a casino abroad. When he needed more money he did another theft.

He has been charged with theft at an airport.

The police operation involved cops from the tourist police, immigration and airport.

Surachet meanwhile said that from tomorrow, Monday, he was turning his full attention to crime committed by foreigners.

He told Sanook that crime especially that committed by Nigerians was on the rise again.

Nigeria's ambassador said last year that more than 1,000 of his country's nationals were in jail in Thailand.

I look forward to the coming news about the RTP rounding up the gangs of Nigerian drug dealers who stand openly selling drugs in Bangkok Sukhumvit Sois 3 and 13 every night, and have done for years, under the noses of the RTP.

Chilean not Nigerian , the headline is wrong.

Read the OP properly, there's nothing wrong with the headline.  The quote about Nigerians was made at the weekend, the report about the Chilean's arrest was a separate case.

Unfortunately, by dint of their appearance the Nigerians should be rather easy to find- particularly at an airport.  If that can't be done then I don't know.

Of course, the problem is most easily solved much earlier down the line.  I doubt BJ wants to tackle the real corruption.
