PM stresses need to tackle traffic congestion in Bangkok and vicinity

BANGKOK, 27th August 2018 (NNT) – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is calling on responsible agencies to work out measures to tackle traffic congestion in Bangkok, which has grown significantly because of economic expansion, resulting in an accumulation of traffic problems.

Gen Prayut said he had inspected the capital city of Bangkok to observe first-hand its traffic problems and progress in linking transportation networks.

He said many transport infrastructure projects are now underway to create a more complete mass transit system.

There are currently about 4,300 kilometers of roadways in Bangkok. Main roads amount to just 25 percent of this. More people want to cross the Chao Phraya River, but the existing bridges are not able to accommodate increased traffic across the Chao Phraya he said, adding constructing new bridges will be difficult and must be approved by the public.

A study shows that, by 2021, 480,000 people are likely to cross the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok each day. In the next 10 years, the number is expected to increase to 840,000.

Gen Prayut went on to say that he has asked relevant agencies to conduct more studies on the adoption of modern technologies for traffic control, and to draw up short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans to deal with traffic problems.

responsible agencies

Oxymoron of the day.

His Supreme Magnificence urges Bangkokians to follow his own enlightened methods in keeping traffic smooth and problem-free.

      -      Always travel by motorcade.

-          Try to keep motorcades to fewer than 18 vehicles.

-          Ensure motorcycle outriders precede your motorcade by a minimum of 100 meters.

-          Deploy a minimum of 6 uniformed officers to halt traffic flow at each major intersection along the route.

-          If traffic appears heavy consider using one of your helicopters.

As always, Uncle Number One has his finger on the pulse of the common people and leads by example.

why not jack up petrol costs to European levels?  More tax money collected to build more railways and fewer cars on the road for short journeys.

Charge (as in London) a special fee to enter the core of the city.

Hit the pocket book, the only way to get the public's attention.

I thought the tour of the traffic spots was so he could word an appropriate edict under section 44 to banish congestion from the streets and roads of Bangkok within a month.

Yeah great idea. More bridges and roads and more cars.
How about reducing the number of cars every day?
The roads can't be widened in a narrow city like Bangkok and reached their capacities since years.
But nothing has been done until now. To make it worse the last government encouraged people to buy more and new cars. How stupid...
I'm clearly for a hefty city toll and even/odd licence plate system.
Make way for busses, motorcycles and bicycles!
