Free expressway buses to beat traffic jams start Monday: BMTA

By The Nation

The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority will starting on Monday provide free air-conditioned buses on two expressway routes to help rush-hour commuters avoid heavy congestion caused by construction for electric train routes.

BMTA acting director Prayoon Chuaykaew said the service will help motorists beat traffic caused by the constructions of the Lard Prao-Samrong Yellow Route electric train and the National Cultural Centre-Min Buri Orange Route electric train.

The first special expressway bus route would help users of bus 145 running from Preakkasa Bordin to Morchit 2 terminal. Six air-conditioned buses will run every 30 minutes, he added.

The second special expressway route would be provided for users of bus 168 from Min Buri to the Victory Monument. Six buses will be used to provide the service every 20 minutes.

The free services will run from 6am to 9am and from 4pm to 6.30pm Prayoon added.

Won't this just transfer the chaos onto the highways?

I was told that Bangkok was discussing the issue with Tokyo where they deal with traffic very efficiently.

The best thing about Tokyo is that their traffic solutions cost next to nothing. First you cannot won a car unless you have somewhere to park it off the street. Second, there is almost no on street parking in the city so that the whole of every roadway can be utilised. Third the traffic lights are coordinated (you can do this with $100 computer....but what it means is that you get stopped once on your journey and then sail through the rest of the lights. And finally they bring 13 million people every day on the trains. These people are squashed like sardines but they prefer to travel by train as it is economical and they don't have to find a parking space near work.

For a major city with a day time population of 25 million, I have not seen its equal for traffic flow anywhere in the world.

And if course you have been to rio, Tokyo, mexico, etc etc?

Or is it easier just to have a bleat to reflect your general ennui and unhappiness with life and declare bangkok a lost cause as it gives you some sort of solace?

Reassuringly sensible. It may not be a full solution - but these lines need to be built so that there are real alternatives to the roads. At least someone is trying.

Unless they have special bus lanes, I'm pretty sure the wait for the 7th bus will be more than 20 mins because all buses would be stuck at expressway.
