A Bangkok motorist drowned early Thursday after her pickup truck stalled in rapidly rising floodwaters in an underpass leading to her housing estate and then engulfed the vehicle.

Rescue workers from the Por Tek Tueng Foundation were soon after 2am on the scene on a motorway frontage road near the Airport Rail Link’s Ban Thap Chang station.

Pol Lt Col Thanapol Chalermpermpol of Prawet precinct said Panumat Sae-tsae, 41, drowned inside the pickup in 2.5 metres of water.

The 100-metre-long tunnel to the housing estate runs under a railway line.

Panumat’s relatives told police she knew the tunnel was flooded but thought she could get through. The water rose rapidly, though, apparently because a water pump was out of order.

When her engine stalled, she called home for help, only for the water to submerge the vehicle.

Panumat’s family paid workers to dive to her rescue but they were unable to get to her in time.

Rescue workers finally retrieved the body at 5.30am and took it to Police Hospital for an autopsy.

So, is this underpass the only way in and out of the estate? If there's another way, how many minutes longer is that detour?

Looks like it's Golden Nakara.  I believe there is a back entrance on Onnut 65 but it is a bit of a trek from the front entrance.

"Panumat’s relatives told police she knew the tunnel was flooded but thought she could get through. The water rose rapidly, though, apparently because a water pump was out of order." ???

She could not get out of the car and walk or swim out of the tunnel ?

Swimming isn't really a Thai thing.

From reports in the Thai media it seems indeed difficult or impossible to reach that "luxury" housing estate on another way.

And you guess it, she could not swim. So obviously panicked/afraid to get out of the car.

Indeed that water pump was defective and had to be switched before.

She could not open the door and stand on the bonnet or the roof until some help arrived?

Please, this can't be accurate;   Panumat’s family paid workers to dive to her rescue but they were unable to get to her in time.     If not, it's just wrong, so very wrong. Paying people to do the right thing....... Sad.

I assume like with so many of the stories that Thaivisa reposts, that it is mistranslated or bad reporting.

Seems like she drove in rather fast and got into trouble rapidly, seeing water engulf the car she panicked and called relatives for help, arriving they obviously couldn't help her or she help herself. When rescue workers arrived the car was submerged so relatives said they would pay someone if they would dive in and try a last second rescue!

Alas all attempts were already too late!
