PM Prayut confirms no lifting of ban on political activities

BANGKOK, 12 September 2018 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has confirmed that the ban on political activities won't be lifted just yet, in order to prevent probable disorder in the country. 

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Tuesday that the government is planning a special training program for provincial government officials and members of the public 90 days prior to the general election, in order to boost public awareness and clarify the government’s emphasis on the principle of good governance as well as other related policies. 

Gen. Prayut insisted that the planned training is not intended to help the government enjoy any political gain but to help ensure only quality politicians are elected to serve the people. 

Concerning the lifting of the political activity ban, the PM said that he remains concerned about possible turmoil if all activities are allowed to resume while asking all parties concerned to help prevent further conflict in order for the general poll to take place as planned. 

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the Council of State, Mr. Dissathat Hotarakit, said that measures to control the use of social media in election campaigns, which have been adapted from those enforced in other countries, are being reviewed. 

However, Mr. Meechai Ruchuphan, Chair of the Constitution Drafting Commission, said today that he disagreed with the drafting of a provision to control the use of social media in election campaigning in the draft national cybersecurity law because such a plan is only intended for enforcement during the election.

I'm sorry, but I can't help but call that the bullshit that it is.

Playing fair is not a concept he understands.

He has been campaigning for months to get a head start.

One can only hope the Thai people have had enough and don't fall for the lies and oppression any longer.

Roadmaps often have new roads and detours, this "roadmap" already has many.

Idiot, not really much else to add except that this is depressing and as predictable as can be. I don't think Thai people are ever going to wake up.. Or are they just that stupid that they can't see this charlatan for what he is yet??

How is lifting the ban now, or doing so in a month or two, going to be the difference between civil unrest or no civil unrest? It’s been over four years now. Are we supposed to believe that people still need a few more months to cool off and then everything will be hunky dory? 

 

Lift the ban already. 

The leaders of Thailand have certainly learnt nothing from their modern day History,  If the unelected Prime Minister of Thailand feels that to lift the ban on political activities would lead to public protest , why then did he in the first instance pull on a coup knowing full well that it would resort back to the status quo, indirectly nothing has changed , nothing in the future will change and  what's more judging the past three decades ,Thailand as a nation will for decades in the future wont change, Coups General Prayut never solved anything , proper political process will, unfortunately Thai democracy is not included.

I don't think the Thai people are so stupid as not to be able to see this autocratic charlatan for what he is.

 

But they are not courageous heroes. Most of them lack GUTS. In my experience, it's as simple as that. They now have a seemingly decent alternative political party in Thanatorn's Future Forward - but when that great opportunity for real change and progress is now being throttled by the junta, the Thais say and do nothing.

No lifting of the ban, Prayut has not finished the self promotion tours yet and will not allow anyone to interfere with that.

The ban on free political speech will NEVER be fully lifted by the junta. It's clear from the article that they still want to control social media - threatening people with imprisonment for anything that might 'confuse' the public (i.e. telling the truth about the junta)!

What the chief clown fails to understand is the longer he keeps this up, the more people will realise how twisted, 1 sided his actions are, then rebel against him.

The sooner that happens the better for Thailand.

Oh don't fret, my dear old chap, once/if a means of controlling social media is devised and put into place, it will be in use constantly and indefinitely - purely to ensure order and good governance of course.

This quote from his 2015 interview with Al Jazeera is more poignant than ever

Just one day, you arrogant twerp and if fairness can somehow - anyhow - prevail, you're going to get the biggest comeuppance in history. Why can't Prayuth see the truth in the age-old maxim, 'The higher the climb, the harder the fall', before it really comes home to roost? I often wonder how many Thais, of any political persuasion, class and wealth truly want to see Prayuth out of the big chair - the chair which, over the past 12mths, he appears to be taking root in.

I wouldn't be holding my breathe on that. They've copped it hook, line and sinker for the past 4+ years.

That's what happens when the previous government is overthrown in a military coup.

Can but hope that this is a case of the hare and the tortoise !

We all know he is a scared little man who cannot deal with debate or scrutiny.  He is putting off the inevitable as long as he can with any weak excuse at his disposal.  . 

 

In learning NOTHING, Thailand does not reference any good political achievements outside of Thailand thus you have these sorts of actions .   Thailand is unique they say.  It is not.  It is far from it.  It refuses to learn from history only to repeat the worst of it with great regularity. 

Theyre not doing anything until the roadmap to control of lotto ticket price is complete. Seems to be taking some time.

My wife was all praise for him following the coup and so we didn't discuss politics for a while for the sake of peace. And yet she referred to it as "our stupid government" the other day, so I do still have a little hope left that they are waking up.

This guy really is running scared.  He hates a political battle because the ones he is used to are those with guns and he does not have the intellectual ability to argue a verbal political case.

 

But in a way , the longer he prevents other political parties putting their case to the nation, the the lesser are his odds of winning the political fight.   He could stop all electioneering until the day before the poll, but he will still be thrashed, by Pheu Thai or their successors, should trumped up charges ban them by name, simply because the millions of people he despises whom may in the main be simple folk , they are not stupid. The longer he strings it out the more the disdain for his and the Junta's activities over the last 4 years from the nation grows. He has never won anything by his own merit in his life and it will not start now.

Alas, I fear the ones who are waking up are also waking up to the fact that the fix is in and it is now too late. Still, they can't say they weren't warned.

Prayut tries anything to stay in power and Thailand will live after elections still under a junta dominated government. Prayut prepares all for it.
