PHUKET: The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) this morning issued an advisory warning people to beware strong winds, flash floods and landslides brought on by heavy rain as the southwest monsoon buffets Phuket and other areas along the Andaman coast.

“The strong southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, and the Gulf of Thailand. More rain and some heavy downpour are forecast for the country, especially in the western monsoon area, or in other words, the Central, the East and the South (west coast),” said the warning. (See here.)

“People in the area should be aware of the impact of the severe conditions that could lead to flash floods, the overflow of the river, and landslides.

Im sorry but its making landfall in Hong Kong!!What on earth are they on about

I was instantly thinking the same, but if you look at the wind chart (10 m above ground), you'll see that Mangkhut actually drags wind from the Andaman Sea...

I'm sorry -- they are talking about the South West monsoon over the Andaman sea. I actually thought about it for ten seconds.

What they mean is as the typhoon Mangkut is approaching Hong Kong it's anti-clockwise movement is sucking air in from the south west, altering the usual pattern of the monsoon band!

This could mean rain extending throughout the lower half of Thailand across the Andaman sea and maybe further north to central regions !!

Hope that clears it up a bit.
