JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A Palestinian man was shot on Tuesday by Israeli police who said he tried to stab a Jewish worshiper near Damascus Gate outside the walled Old City on Yom Kippur, the holiest fast day in the Jewish calendar.

A police spokesman said the attacker had been "neutralised." Witnesses said police sealed off a street in which a body lay on the ground covered with a sheet.

The spokesman said the assailant was a 26-year-old Palestinian from Qalandia in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and that his presence in Jerusalem was illegal due to an entry ban on Palestinians during the Jewish High Holy Days.

"Officers identified an assailant who ran towards a Jewish (worshipper) and tried to knock him to the ground. He then continued running towards the policemen while brandishing a sharp object in his hand intending to harm them," the spokesman said.

Palestinian witnesses said they saw a young man fleeing, pursued by police who opened fire.

Palestinian street attacks against Israelis, many carried out by assailants with no known affiliation to militant groups, have been sporadic since 2015, a year after peace talks collapsed.

On Sunday, a Palestinian fatally stabbed an American-born Jewish settler in the occupied West Bank and was then himself shot and seized by armed civilians who gave chase.

Complete baloney! Link please.
It's called research. Try it.

Palestine had Jews resettling there since 1896 because it was under British control. The Palestinians didn't bat an eyelid because the money was flowing for them to allow Jews to integrate into Palestinian society.
After the 1948 Holocaust a mass migration happened and that's when things got heated. Britain couldn't control the fighting from Palestinians so the U.N carved it up.

Palestinian leaders accepted the first map because they were heavily compensated which probably went to a select few at the top.

We have this mess today because they can't accept that they made a bad deal and the Israelites are just protecting themselves.

Muslims didn't give a crap about Jerusalem before the Jews claimed it. It was in disrepair.
Things would have been fine if they just honoured their original deal.

How many Palestinian Muslims are allowed to pray at the Wailing Wall? None. Can you imagine the violent reaction of Jewish worshippers if one rolled out his prayer mat there?

Palestinians do not have full authority over their holy places because the illegal IDF army of occupation patrols and controls who visits and when. Not satisfied with the Wailing Wall fanatical Jews  now wish to conduct religious ceremonies on Haram al Sharif and do so (supposedly against Israel's rules for permission to visit) Some even want to destroy the Dome of the Rock, pouring gas on an already volatile situation.

Such fanatical provocations may have led to the man's attack?

Nice avoidance.

1. Jews stay out of the Dome of the Rock. Arabs stay away from the Wailing Wall.

2. an Israeli who kills an Arab for merely praying is going to be tried in an Israeli Court and jailed. Whole bunch of Israelis have been tried for crimes against Arabs. Arab kills Jew (or American)=hero.

3. No legit Arab is precluded from worshipping. The Israels work in conjunction with the religious leaders at  the Dome.

4. What some fanatics allegedly want to do is  prevented  by the Israel authorities. You want to contend that Arabs control their fanatics? 555555

Your position has no bearing in reality and leads inescapably to the conclusion that you merely espouse anti semitism.

You've obviously never been there.

Personally after visiting the Kotel I wondered why we allow Islamic filth to have their terrorist dome

where our beloved temple should be.

Well that is mighty strange because the British did not even capture Palestine until 1917.

The rest of you post is similarly inaccurate.

You're trolling. Goodbye.

Jews were resettling long before 1917.
Britain was there but not in control in 1896 when Jews were invited to immigrate.

Why would Muslims pray at the Western Wall? It isn't a holy site as far as they are concerned. Can you come up with a lamer deflection?

The Palestinians, in conjunction with Jordan, do have jurisdiction over their holy places. That it doesn't cover using the grounds to carry attacks, protests and violence is part of the understandings involved.

There are religious Jewish nutters. Welcome to reality. That doesn't make their ambitions or actions mainstream or legal. That you try to paint things in a misleading manner or call groups involved by wrong names is about as expected. Apparently, in your imaginary version of things there are no Palestinian Muslims wishing for similar things regarding Jews and their presence in Jerusalem, or indeed, Israel.

And once more with justifications for violence - the Jews he attacked weren't trying to pray in a Muslim holy site (unless one applies this to Jerusalem in general) etc.
