PM urges tough punishment against civil servants in welfare fraud

As a new round of corruption scandals hits the government,  Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha today tries to demonstrate his intolerance toward the problem by declaring that state officials found implicated in an alleged embezzlement of salaries for disabled workers will be temporarily relieved, not just transferred.

He was responding to a petition submitted with National Human Rights Commission by a network for disabled people’s rights protection over alleged embezzlement of salaries paid to workers with disabilities. About 20,000 disabled workers hired for 9,500 baht a month have had their salaries deducted between 500 and 3,000 baht a month in the embezzlement scandal, said Labour Minister Pol Gen Adul Sangsingkeo, citing information from the petition.

An investigation into the alleged money embezzlement case would begin as soon as he returned to Bangkok, said Pol Gen Adul Tuesday while attending a mobile Cabinet meeting in Phetchabun.

First sensible thing he's said in ages. But he, his deputy, his brother, and a whole myriad of army brass are hardly whiter than white are they.

Stealing off the disabled though makes one a special kind of scumbag. Just awful

Ooh! What a tough guy!

But, instead of transferred or relieved, why don't you send the stinking thieves to jail?

Yes, jail. You know, the place where non-bureaucrats go when they are caught stealing?

More half hearted spouting from Prayut, stop the BS, any government official involved in corruption deserves jail time.

Ill -gotten assets stripped.

Inactive posts, removal from post is not enough.

Throw them under a bus.

Just as soon as you have paid the cash to the right people to have the bus released from the customs pound that is...

They should be permanently relieved of all assets and their freedom.

'Temporarily relieved' for committing a major crime against humanity and against the state? And Prayuth boasted the NCPO's commitment to fighting corruption when he forced his way into Govt. House, 4 1/2 years ago.

He has to go down as one of the most cowardly fighters in history . . . simply running scared of tackling the disease that's eating away at HIS government. Without the threat of gun-power, he's an absolute nothing-man.

The government has an organisation which protects senior civil service goofballs and politicians who are stupid enough to be caught with their hands in the till. It is called the National Anti-Corruption Commission, NACC.

These are just the usual fluff words from the PM using the situation to make himself appear a strong leader in the election lead-up.

No. No.  That would be the start of a slippery slope.  If civil servants could face jail who knows one day even corrupt government or military leaders could be held to account.

...or people who are caught committing other horrific crimes like wearing the wrong t-shirt.

More smoke and mirrors.  In fact if they really need to find out about dishonest and corrupt officials , not just for this instance, then all they need to do is line the walls of all government building with mirrors.

Time to start 'transferring' people to long jail sentences but there would be nobody left to run the country if all the criminals were jailed !

Temporary relieved. OMG, That is going to impress the public, I am sure.

I truly though the PM was a PEOPLES MAN when he took over.

He should look into the minister who gave the 15 days to investigate it.

It would take longer than that to get a document released for evidence.

Another huge theft from officials to be brushed under the carpet.

The PM should realy consentrat on this and issue sevear punishments, huge fines, confiscation of large purchased over the years it was going on for, and banned from any type of government services for life.

The PM would have a good chance of being elected to PM next year.

Show the PEOPLE, MR PRIME MINISTER.

The real problem is when you replace these thieves you just get another bunch of thieves in their place.

Mighty big fighting words. I bet all investigations will grind to a sudden halt when the investigations get near to his military mates in respective ministries.

"Social Development and Human Security Minister Gen Anantaporn Kanjanarat said the alleged money embezzlement was likely to be a problem between the private companies and associations involved in a project aimed at training disabled workers to acquire work skills providing them a better job opportunity."

Good work "General porn" you must have been doing a wonderful job, along with the rest of them.

So instead of his crime-fighting administration decked out in absolute power and control over four anti-corruption agencies, it takes a private network of disabled citizens to file a petition with the National Human Rights Commission over the corruption.

Jail only for political enemies. Bureaucrats and police chiefs will get transferred to an inactive posts until the heat cooled down. Generals and aligned politicians all get free passes. That’s how the cookies crumbled in junta land.

. . . 'tries to demonstrate his intolerance'. Superbly inappropriate words to apply to the man who would be 'boss'. To demonstrate intolerance by 'not just transferring but temporarily relieving' would be a line, worthy of a stand-up comic who has his audience in stitches. Not having read Thai law and punishment, I have to wonder if, as would appear, bureaucrats are relieved of all blame for whatever crimes they commit. If any of you learned posters could enlighten me, here, I'd be grateful. How will Prayuth actually see this heinous crime, this monthly robbery of handicapped workers' wages, by people who his government have placed in a position of trust?

I may be on my own, here, but I see this crime as being every bit as bad as drug-trafficking, to which the death-penalty applies. Drug traffickers routinely commit acts that threaten to mess up the lives of their fellows. Is this bureaucratic burglary any less an offence? Not in my books and the fact that it's committed by trusted, well-paid officials only makes it worse. Execute the life-stealers, I say.

And, as for 'PM urges tough punishment', that would be the stand-ups next gag.

"urges"?.....how about "promises" or "guarantees" or "mandates"...

Urging means little.

If a sentence of corruption is followed by a hand slap -  well, what's the point?

I learned something from this: When your family is knee deep tangled in fishy business, gather members of your village and loudly assail your direct neighbors for not cutting the lawn.

I'm sure we're on the same side, Lupatria, but I'm not quite sure who the symbolic 'direct neighbours' are, in the Junta 'tough punishment' context. I'll think about it whilst getting into TalkSport and a beer.

This PM does an awful lot of 'Urging'. Is he suffering from piles?

What these crim's need is a very strong talking to like, "You've been a very naughty boy"  - that should sort out the problem once and for all.

Sure, he'll step down [when pigs fly].

Yet, the notorious systems are still firmly in place, as they have been for decades - regardless of standing government.

Most miss the bigger picture, if any picture at all.
