All eyes on Prayut, and just a bit on Democrats and Pheu Thai

The new laws on elections and structures of the House of Representatives and the Senate have set the ball rolling for Thailand’s first democratic exercise at ballot boxes since the coup in 2014. The most anticipated part, however, is yet to come.

Military-backed Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, leader of the 2014 coup, has yet to make known his political plans regarding the elections.

According to previous reports and his own suggestions, Prayut had been tentatively scheduled to clear the air this month on whether or not he will align himself with a particular political party so that he will be its candidate for the premiership.

But people who have been waiting expectantly were disappointed last week, when Prayut shrugged off growing curiosity, saying his future plans were his business.

"...All eyes on Prayut, and just a bit on Democrats and Pheu Thai..."

All eyes are on Prayut because he is campaigning while banning other parties from doing the same.

Lift the political restrictions and then we will see eyes on many people...

This is what a plutocracy/oligarchy [take your pick] looks like....

This month is not over yet.  If he does not clear the air, it will just show he does not keep his promises.  The big sissy will not debate as he is an entitled fop who sees himself as above such things.  How he is even stomached is beyond explanation.

Interesting to note that there is not a mention of FFP as an alternative to the more establishment political parties.

Pinocchio keep a promise, you must be joking the only promise he is keeping is to load up his pockets as much as he can before being dumped. As for a debate he wouldn't know the meaning of the word

Nor will we ever get to witness any such live or televised debates, as that's not really tradition in Thai politics.

Can you imagine the sh*t slinging and heavy handed rhetoric that might go on in any such proposed national political debate? Especially these days, when we have a standing govt that wasn't elected but taken by force.

Considering that they don't have much practice conducting civil debates, as our Thailand has been largely under military rule since way way back....with a brief faux democratic stance here and there.

Debate and reasoning is not in the Thai political psyche at all. That's arguably the chief reason why defamation is listed as a criminal offence here, it is easier to shut someone down through the threat of lawsuits than it is to actually debate them.

Most political players here are very skinned, and on the face of things, utterly pathetic people who have very little conviction on any given political agenda.

I can imagine the end of the debate - the crash and rumble as the tank drives through the back door of the TV studio, and the cries of alarm as the accompanying infantry fan out through the audience, returning happiness, restoring order and democracy, and dragging away anyone eating sandwiches or holding up the wrong number of fingers. As the dust settles and the lights dim, the credits roll and the Prime Minister dutifully returns to Government House, to reluctantly turn himself to the task of guiding the country for the next XX years..

Hopefully someone will put the "evil eye" on him !

But having said that, then yes it is unfair to others for him to go out on the campaign trail whilst banning others from doing so, the elections are forecast for Feb 24th 2019 for goodness sake.   With the exception of the US who appear to be campaigning 3 years out of every 4 continuously . What is the point of months  of it ? In the UK and many other countries it is generally around the 2 months to 6 weeks period for campaigning.  Even then people get fed up with it and with all the political rhetoric that goes on then 1 week would be more than enough to understand the parties main agendas. In Thailand I doubt very much whether most people actually understand too much of whatever party it is stands-for.

Honey-pie . . . please pass that new sick bucket. Yes, that's the one . . . the one that I asked you to mark 'Puke', but you marked 'Prayuth', instead . . . saying 'same-same'.

Yes, that's how it is, these days, thanks to this man-child's continued teasing. And how come this 'now a politician who used to be a soldier but is now looking like a soldier because that's the mood I'm in' prime minister is in his army gear for this photo-op? What the hell goes on inside his oversized head? . . . assuming anything goes on, of course.

As usual the junta are doing what want to do freely while restricting everyone else...well, I mean...there's no one even trying to stop them.

It comes down to who has the biggest stick.

Yes....... leave it as his business............ and 'PRAY' for Thailand that they get 'better than him'............. In the near future.......

He is no hurry to do this; why should he? At present he can continue on his merry way electioneering as he chooses. When he declares his hand he obliged by his own laws to follow the same rules as the others.

And even more difficult for him is that he will have to answer awkward questions in a way that people can understand; that alone will be a serious challenge for him.

Then we will hear some incoherent ramblings and see some harrumphing and deep frowns and maybe if we are lucky some angry finger pointing.

He seems to be getting a little pudgy, perhaps some election corsets would in order.

And Big P won't clear the air until that campaigning appears to have made him an easy winner. Of course if the general public got more aggressive about telling him to get on with the election strongly enough they would ensure that the election takes place as promised and force him to state his (already well known) intentions.

He doesn't look very democratic, does he?

Nor do his friends.

I hope they won't be ordering their soldiers who to vote for.
