My Thai stepson requires a blood test for thalassemia and I wondered if someone could recommend a Bangkok hospital that could do it for a reasonable price. So far he has been quoted 10,000 baht which seem high to me.

Try contacting Bangkok Christian Hospital in Silom.  Very competent and reasonably priced.

I have been very satisfied with the treatment I have received there.

The blood testing required is a Complete Blood Count (cheap) and then Hemoglobin electrophorsis, this last is very expensive. Sometimes serum ferritin nd iron binding capacity is also done, not too expensive but more than CBC.

 

If he is Thai he is eligible for free care under the universal coverage scheme, no need or reason to go to a private hospital. Government hospitals are quite experienced in diagnosing and treating thalessemia.

 

He should go to the government hospital which covers the area where he is registered under a tabian ban.(Which can be changed, many people live elsewhere than where they are listed in a tabian ban; if it is a  long term living  arrangement it is well worth changing the tabian ban listing).

 

If going through the public systm is not feasible because of time pressure or other reason,  and you need only the test not physician evaluation, call or email Bria labs (Lardprao area) and see if they can do it :

With both Bria and RSU they can definitiely do CBC and ferritin it is the hemoglobin electrophoresis that is uncertain so ask just about that. "Hemoglobin electrophoresis to check for for thalessemia" and best have a Thai speaker do it

P.S. I just checked a list I have from Bria and there is a section for Electrophoresis under which there is Hemoglobin typing (code 161001)

 

The CBC code is 111001 . Serum and the iron tests are:

81060 Transferrin Saturation

81039 Serum Iron

81036 Total Iron binding capacity

 

Suggest you email or call them and provide these numbers as reference, it will aid them in giving you the cost
