I have been told mixed things about getting a work permit when only holding a tourist Elite 20 year visa. Mostly strong no's with the execption of a lawyer who wants me to set up a company and can "100% get me the permit".

 

This is a scam or acceptable? I can't find any information here.

You cannot apply for a work permit if you a Thai Elite visa entry. It is not a non immigrant visa and that is required to apply for a work permit.

The lawyer may well have the connections to get you a legitimate work permit, however, immigration would have a problem if they discovered you were working (even with a work permit) without permission to stay issued on the back of a non-immigrant ‘B’ (maybe ‘O’) visa.
