Fireworks factory explodes in Chachoengsao

Extremely hot weather is suspected of causing an explosion at a fireworks factory in Muang Chachoengsao on Saturday afternoon that left one person injured.

 

 

The roof of the factory owned by Karun Raksanont, 47, was blown off in the explosion, with the debris raining down on the neighbourhood.

 

The explosion, which could be heard a kilometre away, blew out the windows of three nearby homes.

 

Crews arriving on 10 fire engines spent an hour extinguishing the blaze that engulfed the factory on Soi Sothon 3 near the Bang Phra intersection in Tambon Sothon, Pol Captain Pichit Wannarak said. 

 

 

Thanongsak Charoenpol, 40, a relative of Karun, was taken to hospital. 

 

A dog seriously injured in the explosion was also taken for treatment. 

 

Two pickup trucks parked inside the factory compound were destroyed. 

 

Pending further investigation, Pichit said, it seemed possible the extremely hot weather could have triggered the blast.

Um, duh.  "Hot weather" can't make fireworks explode.  Given the total lack of any safety procedures here, it had to be a spark from bad electricals or open flame from a smoker.  Fuel + oxidizer + ignition = boom.

A deckchair and a couple of beers; I would like to have watched that.

Judging from the size of the 'blue pipe' sections the amount of black powder in store on site must have been huge. Of course, the location adjacent to a major road junction would have been judged safe when the required licenses were issued.????

Why am I not surprised that a fireworks factory can be established in a residential area?

Is there such a thing as zoning?
