New minimum wage now $182

Featured Replies

The tripartite commission (union, government, employers) tasked with determining the minimum wage for workers in the textile, garment and footwear industries have agreed to increase the minimum wage to $182, beginning January 2019. Yesterday (Oct.4), the three parties voted for which two figures would be up for the final debate and vote.  They agreed on the unions’ $182 and the employers’ $177.

In the vote today the lower figure was accepted almost unanimously – 0f 28 possible votes, 26 were for it and two abstained. Labor Minister and Labour Advisory Committee Ith Sam Heng said that Prime Minister Hun Sen decided to add an extra $5 to bring the total up to $182 and that there would be no changes to existing benefits and allowances.

Immediately after this announcement the employers tried to balance the higher wage costs. The president of the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia, Van Sou Ieng, said that the minimum wage is a bit high compared to Vietnam, where the minimum wage is $184, and transportation costs are very high in Cambodia.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

That's a heck of an hourly rate.

That is a monthly rate.

I remember about 20 years ago when they were on strike trying to get a raise to $40 a month from $30.

Times have changed.

I know that is in Cambodia but in Thai money it is around roughly 198 baht or so a day.

Actually it would be closer to 225 per day if you use a six day work-week.  Where Thailand is recommending 325 per day for Bangkok currently.

I was averaging it over 30 days.  So Garment factory workers in Cambodia actually get a day off a week?  Not like those making denim jeans  and mobile phones in China where they work every day with compulsory overtime and have nets around the building to catch those trying to jump to suicide?   If you are right, Cambodia sounds like a workers' paradise.  In most third world countries, garment workers are among the most exploited and pretty near the bottom of the barrel.

Believe normal is 10 hours per day - 6 days per week.

At that pay, who is being the more exploited, the factory worker or the go-go dancer?
