BANGKOK — Five Thai universities are among the world’s top 1,000 according to this year’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Mahidol University ranked the highest in the country and was classed in the world’s top 601 to 800, while Chulalongkorn University, Suranari Technology University, Chiang Mai University and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi made the 801 to 1,000 bracket.

Nothing will change until the learning culture changes. One of my students is a medical intern now - show loved the 3 years she spent in the UK where she could openly discuss topics with her professors. It Thailand, her hair wasn't dark enough to work in the ward, even though it's her natural colour. She had to dye it black. And just forget asking Thai professors anything. Just follow the leader, even if they are a clown. Enough said.

Speaking from experience: If that's the best I don't want to see the worst

"Poor education" is a control tool of the elite (backed by the military) who do not want to be challenged for power and control of the Kingdom!

Sure. Goes without saying.

This has been a ruling class base policy for ages.

And one can easily trace it back to a single entity.

Cause and effect.

Vary harsh, Tongjaw. 2 typos shouldn't really bring out the spelling police.

Perhaps a tad harsh, but if you can dish it out then you have to be man enough to take a bit of it back too ????

Tallest midget.

Like the American Revolution and Castro in Cuba and Mao in China.  What do they all have in common?  The lack of education of the people who revolted.  Take your idea back to the drawing board.  Control has nothing to do with education once the cell phone and internet were introduced.  China has 300,000 students in the USA.  How does that fit with your idea?

You went to school at Mahidol?

No, I did a short course there. It was the worst educational experience of my life. The lecturers, including a dean, were clueless. The lectures consisted of them reading verbatim from slides while pointing to each and every word with the cursor. The dean spoke about ethics as if it were a totally alien concept to any non Thai. She offered such gems as "We shouldn't take drugs." She became flustered when asked questions and eventually ran out of the room telling us to look on the internet.

All this to a room full of western university graduates. Calling them morons is being unkind to morons

Yeah...I believe the word for it is plutocracy.

Well good on them...

"How does that fit with your idea?"  Quite easily - look at the Kingdom's education system! Bullying by teachers (not uncommon), rote learning, degrees from Universities that are largely irrevelant outside the Kingdom etc etc. The pre-occupation by Government to want to always "shoot the messenger" as far as internet media is concerned and a system of Government that does not accept any form of criticism. A 'feudal society' protecting the entrenched interests of the powerful. What happened to the university students who "revolted" about the return of a military strongman many years ago? SLAUGHTERED.  Despite cell phones and the internet, because of the disinterested low educated citizenry (who are just trying to make a living) a successful uprising is highly unlikely anytime soon, IMHO.
