Oxfam has indicated that Cambodia ranked 121 out of 157 countries in this year’s inequality index, a drop when compared to last year’s position of 111 out of 152 countries. The Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index 2018 said Cambodia’s current ranking is attributed to poor performance in improving labour rights and wages. However, it noted that government spending and tax policies significantly improved.

The CRI ranked 157 countries this year on policies of social spending, tax and labour rights – three areas the organisation said are critical to reducing inequality. The Kingdom ranked 129 on spending, 95 on taxation policies and 118 on labour rights and wages.

In 2017, Cambodia ranked 137 on spending, 137 on tax policies and 42 on labour rights and wages, the report said. The report, published last week, said Cambodia is ahead of Myanmar, Laos and Singapore, while lagging behind Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
