Hi,

my partner has recently been posted to Thailand for her job and I am now frantically looking for work there as well so I can join her there.

If anyone could help me with some advice on getting IT work in or around Bangkok I'd greatly appreciate it. I have a Bachelor Degree in Computing if that makes it easier and have a broad knowledge base enableing me to work in anyhting from graphic design through to system adminstration and programming!

Any links, email adrresses or other contact details for job agencies or job websights would also be greatly apprecaited.

Thanks,

Lauchlin

www.jobdb.co.th i guess is the largest one, but don't get your hopes up to much :o. Mostly the bulk of the ads says "thai national " only.

Better to look in your country for a company that will send you or maybe just go live on your girlfriends money first and search locally.

read this post from dominik a friend of mine it explains most of the situation: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3467&hl=

Thanks for your advice. If worst comes to worst I can continue working for my company here and doing remote admin type work. I would however like to be able to find a job in Thailand so I get the full expereince of working there. Oh well, I am going over for a week or so next month so maybe I'll just do the old foot in the door trick.

Cheers,

Actually no. It just so happens that I have a broad range of experience and can both design and program (no matter how unbelievable that is!). I fully appreciate the the difficulty of graphic design. Although I have a Bachelor Degree in Computing I also studied Digital Imaging while at University. I dislike cruddy graphic design as much as the next critic. ;-)

How much experience do you have ?? fresh graduate or 10 years industry experience on citable projects.

If the latter of the 2, then you'll have more worth to a Thai or mulitnational employer. Graduates / 2-3 year experience types (Thai nationals) are a dime a dozen in BKK.

You really have to bring specific expertise(as opposed to a broad skill base) and significant proven experience to get a good position in BKK.

I started working in the IT sector running my own business in 1997 while doing my degree part time. Since then I have worked for several small companies mostly in sysadmin/programmer type positions. Because of their size however I have regularly also had to take on the role of web designer, graphic designer, programmer, sales person and technical support as the need has arisen. Part of the great thing about working for small business is this chance to get experience in different areas while gaining an appreciation of other peoples chosen proffessions. It can however be frustrating sometimes as it is hard to focus on developing one particualr area of expertise.

If I was pushed, I'd probably have to say that my specific area of expertise is Linux/Unix administration as this is where I have been mostly working for the past four years. I still feel uncomfortable about saying this tho as compared to somebody like Linux Torvaldis I am no where near being any kind of Linux expert! ;-) There is so much to learn yet so few hours in the day to do it (and still retain some semblance of a social life)!

Thanks for the q's/advice! It always helps to hone the interview skills!

It's gonna be nigh on impossible for you. For obvious reasons, most vacancies are filled by Thai nationals. You'd need to show some uncommon speciality in IT to be considered.

I had exactly the same situation, my wife got a job in bkk in February. I worked in SAP consulting, moved to Thailand with her, took a leave of absence from my previous employer and started looking for a job in bkk. There were lots of positions open suitable for me, but in practice only for Thais. Even multinationals recruiting to english-speaking projects only wanted Thais.

So I took a job in Beijing, with a contract stating I can work part of the time in the companys bkk office. That way I didn’t have to recruit myself through Thais. For example Chinese welcome foreign employees and knowledge in quite a different way than thais. Now I need to travel a lot and spend quite a lot time in bjj but that’s ok with me.

So maybe you could consider taking a job in e.g. Singapore and do some traveling? That is, if you don’t iinsist on being in bkk all the time. For me working in different places just makes the experiences richer.

I have found this to be the case as well. Singapore or Mainland China are much easier to find work in. Have had multiple offers. Thailand has been a wasteland, workwise.

Any good sites for IT in Singapore - I have a more specialised skill than most but I'll keep that to myself for now don't want hoards of you rushing in front of me...
