Cate Blanchett defends straight actors who play LGBTQ+ roles

Cate Blanchett has defended the idea of straight actors playing LGBTQ+ roles amid the ongoing conversation on diversity in Hollywood.

 

The Oscar-winning actress – who played a lesbian character in 2015 movie Carol – weighed-into the discussion, suggesting that questioning whether or not actors had been through a specific experience defied the point of acting.

 

Her comments notably come in the wake of the backlash against Scarlett Johansson playing a trans character (a role she eventually backed out of).

 

"It also speaks to something that I'm quite passionate about in storytelling generally, but in film specifically, is that film can be quite a literal medium," Blanchett said during a Q&A at the Rome Film Festival (via The Hollywood Reporter).

well, Big Bang theory has openly gay actor playing a straight (not knocking him, BTW... Rock Hudson and others were portrayed as straight dreamboats). Black actors playing Hamilton (doing to rave reviews...). One role I loved in Tropic Thunder was American playing Australian playing American black GI....

How about that odd idea that film makers should be able to choose right actor for roles without the PC police passing judgement? There are more important issues to deal with than this IMO

The world seems to be increasingly thin skinned these days. There is at least one particularly famous and powerful example of that out there, and his influence does not seem to be positive for society at large!

 

I say get a life. Grow some thicker skin. Acting is just that. Kudos to the very talented Kate Blanchett for speaking out on this topic. She is right!

People on the left are not a monolith.

Of course gay actors should be able to be cast in straight roles and vice versa.

While I agree with her for the most part as gay actors no longer have to fear losing jobs because they are known as gay, there are very few roles given to trans actors so that is why there was some issue with Scarlett Johansson playing a trans role.
