VISA-run kambodja - stay the night or NOT?

My friend are going for a VISA-run to Kambodja soon. Guides have told him that he must stay the night in kambodja. Can not go in and out directly..

Is this bullshit in order to earn provision from hotell i.e.

A overnight stay is required for a Cambodia visa on arrival at border crossings. If arriving at Phnom Penh airport it is not a requirement.

At most border crossings they charge 300 baht for not staying overnight when departing Cambodia.

If using the Aran/Poipet crossing Thai immigration might refuse entry.

There are several topics  that confirmes that the crossing at Aran/Poi Pet, will deny in and out on the same day. Personally I wouldn't mind a short holiday in Cambodia.
