Hi all,

my wife and I are expecting our first child next month. She is Thai, I am British and we live in Germany (where the child will be born). Does anyone know if our son can have all 3 - Thai, British & German - passports?  Does he have to make a decision at some stage and decide on two passports?

Also............ if my wife takes up German citizenship des she have to give up her Thai nationality?

If she gives up her Thai nationality can she still buy land in Thailand if she is no longer a Thai citizen?

Thanks in advance.

If he's born in Germany he will get Brit and Thai passports,

But Beware, as a Brit born outside the UK (British by descent), he can't pass his British citizenship on automatically to his children, without first living in the UK for 3 years.

Sorry............. I should add that I am getting a German passport due to Brexit. The child will be born before I am officially a German citizen. I can keep my British passport as long as I process the German passport before 31.03.2019.

I am certain your child will be Thai and British. I don't think he will be German as well since they do grant citizenship from being born there.

Neither your wife or child will have to give up their Thai nationality.

Good advice, deliver the child in the UK.

I have a friend in the outer royal family(HRH The King was at her wedding). She hasn't taken US citizenship as she says she doesn't trust the law about owning land. Although it should be OK, she doesn't want to take the risk.

Having dual nationalities does not affect her being able to own land. She would still have all of her rights as a Thai.

That's what I told her but she insists that there was some problem with inheritance with her friend who owned hundreds of rai of land.
