CHIANG MAI, 9 November 2018 (NNT) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)'s Chiang Mai Office disclosed that the northern province’s tourism has grown by four percent this year.

Ms. Phakkhanan Winitchai, Director of TAT, Chiang Mai Office, said statistics from January to August this year shows that Chiang Mai has welcomed approximately 10 million visitors, a four-percent growth from last year, generating over 95 million baht.

The majority of tourists was Thai while 30 percent was international visitors. Among Thai visitors, 40 percent was from the central region with a large number from Bangkok, and about the same ratio from northern Thailand.

Chinese travelers remain the largest crowd in this year’s report followed by those from the United States, Japan and United Kingdom, with an average stay of three days and spending about 4,000 baht per person per day.

The Chinese are doing it online.

All residents of Chiang Mai are now considered tourists by TAT, then we add all people arriving by air land and sea and multiply by pye to get an accurate figure. There is somewhat doubt about whether people in restaurants and temples should also be taken into account.

4% growth is a fantastic result, and I expect a nice year-end bonus for the TAT people. Job well done.

Ha ha! Perhaps they'll go to Chiang Mai and spend it there.

You'll be able to spot them easily - they'll be the group closely following a tour guide waving a flag.

Meanwhile, reports says there is a 50% drop of Chinese visitors to Chiang Mai.

Which is it?

I don’t know how the TAT staff keeps their job. It’s one lie after another in the face of actual data.

I always thought part of the TAT training program was for new recruits to write out one-hundred times:

Details? Don't bother me with details.

It must be the smoke, smog and air pollution that attracts them all. The Chinese should feel right at home in Chiang Mai while Thai visitors from Bangkok should feel the same.

"Chiang Mai ranked sixth worst for air pollution globally".

WOW! That's less than 10 baht per person.

Talking to a friend of about 6 years who works in a bar in Chiang Mai (yes, bar girl) said the other night things are getting quieter and especially the previous week. Now I know that everyone does not goto bars but you would think percentages roughly the same. Increase in tourists, percentage increase bar attendance. So either fake figures, less money to spend or the tourists from different cultures, all all the above.

If TAT is "forced' to put out news articles about how good it is in Chiang Mai..... Then the real situation must be terrible.

A TAT confirmation = The Kiss of Death

BS.  TAT clearly didn't talk to people in tourism dependent businesses in Chiang Mai.

It seems that TAT are only concerned with numbers and even these don't seem spot on.

So optimal scenario would be for a hotel on practically every block and 100m tourists. Someone put them out of their misery and tell them the issues are more complex than this.

I live in the area south of the old city for years and the vendors and business people I know say nothing other that how much tourism has fallen off over the years, and that 'farang' tourism has gone over the proverbial cliff.  Not sure where the new breed of tourist are going but it's not in my old neighborhood.

More foreigners.

No thanks.

Yesyes. And exactly how were they counting the Thai visitors again? Have they extended the TM30 parole report to natives?

Suggestion to TAT: BB gun tourism. Ratatatattatatatatatatatataaaaaamhuwhahahhahaaaaaa! Bloody flying rats.

They never actually release any supporting figures like tax revenue collected from related companies, amount of foreign currency exchanged at banks or whatever. Everyone (on so many issues) is always asked to just believe some "this is how it is" sweeping statement from a faceless official on something and believe it 100% without any reason because they think everyone is too silly to question anything...maybe right regarding the locals to some extent. To me now though, when I hear this sort of thing, it just seems like a whole bunch of BS and farce to hood-wink everyone into believing the morons in charge have some clue as to what they are doing. Every month they report continual increases and improvements...give me a break.

Long time farang here joke that the 'news' organizations here (mostly state run or state influenced) will release conflicting stories like these on a regular basis.

In fact, you can almost predict with perfect accuracy that a story of a negative will be met the same or next day with a positive.

It's the Thai Taxi Story strategy
