More than 500 people have been infected with the Chikungunya virus in Thailand’s southern provinces this year, a senior public health official said Monday.

Doctor Suwitthampalo, director of the 12th Disease Control Office, said 538 people had been diagnosed with the virus between January 1 and October 30, broken down as 213 in Satun, 192 in Narathiwat, 207 in Songkhla and 15 in Trang.

The virus causes fever and joint pain, similar to dengue but doesn’t lead to internal bleeding.

How does one contract this virus, or rather, how to avoid contracting it?

Ever thought about looking for this on Google? Could be a great help you know to find out more.

The wife got it a few years back, fever and severe pain in the joints, similar to Ross River fever, most unpleasant and lasted about a week. It's the mosquitoes that bite in the afternoon, same as dengue, that transmit the disease. Occurs during the rainy season down south, but it's not confined to the south; Phuket had several cases of Chikungunya in 2009.
