My plan for extension of permission to stay (based on original Non-Imm O-A visa) next June needs to be modified, it seems.  ????

Could anyone who has successfully arranged for automatic monthly deposit of their Social Security payments into a Thai account please tell me which bank and what kind of account they used?

Thanks.

I have been doing it for several years if you are writing about US social security payments.

At this time it can only be transferred to a Bangkok Bank Account via their New York branch.

Info is here: https://www.bangkokbank.com/en/Personal/Other-Services/Transfers/Transferring-Into-Thailand/Transfer-money-from-US-to-Thailand-via-Bangkok-Bank-NewYork-branch

It has been stated by the embassy that the SSA will add Thailand to the list of countries for direct deposit in the first quarter of next year. When that is done there may be other choices.

A follow-on question:  if you needed to show proof of that income to immigration, would you show a bank book from Bangkok Bank NY, or would you transfer money from that account to a Thai branch first?

You will only have a direct deposit account here in Thailand and show the bank book for it. When the SSA transfers your money to New York it is credited to your account here. It is not possible to open an account at the New York branch.

Edit: When you set up the account should request that you be notified by SMS when the transfer comes in. Here is one from last month. The amount in dollars is minus the fee for NY which is $5 to $10.

I think having of few of them to show immigration might be useful.

Got it, thanks.  My current Thai account is at a different bank, so I'll hope SSA adds Thailand to its IDD list early next year.  If not, I'll go the Bangkok Bank route.

You can check the list of countries here that is updated monthly. https://www.ssa.gov/deposit/GIS/data/Reports/ALLCTRYWEB.htm

It is unknown how they will be handled by the banks here. It might be the same direct deposit account arrangement as Bangkok Bank has now that requires you to go person to with

They will still be doing them but after April they will have to be in the IAT format which is the code for international ACH transfers. The link I posted for Bangkok Bank has info about it.

The SSA is already doing most of them with that code.

Sorry to jump in this American themed thread but I was wondering, have you talked to the Canadian Embassy on their path forward concerning these changes to income verification?

Not sure where you got the 3 months to set it up. It certainly does not take that long to set one up for the US social security payments. I would say about 2 weeks at the most for the Social Security Administration to have it set up.

The web site says Thailand does not have direct deposit of SS benefits.  So they consider using the routing number through the New York branch as a domestic deposit even though (a) the account is in Thailand and (b) it is a special account with withdrawals in person only (unlike U.S. bank accounts)?

yes.....I had my visa renewed just prior to the ''big anouncment''by the UK embassy ,i was in BKK to get my ''letter of income'' which i have for 10 years now,the woman at my Canadian embassy said'' we are expecting changes '' and told me the letters of income would end soon ,when I asked her why '' she replied '' to much work for the Embassy''....read that how you will ,but I am expecting next year my letter of income will ''be no more''

Which website? At this time the SSA does not not do direct deposits directly to Thai banks. But that may change.

I fully aware of how the account works at Bangkok Bank since I have had one for over 6 1/2  years.

I was not trying to tell you how it works.  I was asking the question  --  Are U.S. govt deposits in Bangkok Bank accounts in Thailand considered a U.S. domestic transfer?

NOTE:  I wrote U.S. govt deposits since military and VA pensions are also directly deposited in Bangkok Bank accounts.   I do not know how else to categorize the deposits other than direct since they go directly from the payer to the payees account.   They are not deposited in any intermediary account.

As to your question which web site, I was referring to the web site you posted:   https://www.ssa.gov/deposit/GIS/data/Reports/ALLCTRYWEB.htm

COUNTRIES WITHOUT SSA'S INTERNATIONAL DIRECT DEPOSIT   and Thailand was listed.

My comment about the website was due to you quoting my post which only had a link to Bangkok Bank. The other comment was you writing about it being a special account and etc like I was not aware of that.

They are done via ACH to Bangkok Bank in New York which is a domestic transfer. But they are sending most of them with a IAT code for international ACH transfers.

I assume if the SSA starts allowing direct deposits to any  Thai bank the other government entities will do the same.

I stand corrected.  I went back and looked.  I clicked on your Bangkok Bank URL and it wouldn't load.  So I opened a VPN and clicked reload and the SSA site came up and I did not look at the URL and notice it was not what you posted.  Interesting.

Not sure how the URL could of changed. The Bangkok Banks open for me with my normal IP address. But I cannot open any SSA page with it.

It worked until TrueOnline changed my IP address. Sometimes I just use my tablet by using data that is also a True IP address to open the SSA pages.
