These mountains, valleys and especially the nice people were the reason, that I married an Asian woman and I left 1980...I never came back to Europe.....

The only reason to envy me, is that I made it to move out from there.

When we meet, I can really relex. He talks for 25 minutes, non stop, And when I finalkly manage to stop him, by asking if he ever breathes, he giove another 35 minutes speech, about breathing.

I did not change my name from Johann to Yohan....

When I signed up at Thaivisa-Forum the user-name johann was already existing...

So I took -yohan-.....same as it is written in Japanese....

When using the name -yohan- in Japan on the phone, the Japanese customer is often asking me, if I am a Korean.... YO-HAN..... (not impossible, and I have some hard accent when speaking Japanese...) So what name should I use instead of YOHAN or JOHANN?

There are radical (American born) Asian racist feminists.......giving me a hard time how to talk to such *ladies* - not like with this Australian one from a feminist primary school....

I am technical staff (TV/Video technician, Japanese licenced) and I am working at

Just doing anything, what has to do with technical work...computers, graphics, electrician, aircondition....just anything....

To go back to Europe for me is out of question, to remain in Japan is OK for life, but should I am not be able to earn money, I will end here as a very poor man, and for my wife the same.

The best solution is to move on again....for early retirement...We were checking Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand....Out of all we both think, Thailand is the best choice for various reasons....bought a condo already there in Jomtien.

savings are ok for Thailand. but not enough for Japan....

also made vacation almost always in Thailand....big family (7 people) short airplane transfer (6 hours) cheap and plenty choice of accomodation....

Next year spring 2005, we should be out of Japan....

and should be in Thailand for a longer while...

May I ask the same about you?

I'm a Brit working with a dozen Germans here in LOS. And all speak reasonable English, which is he language of communication with our Thai co-workers and Japanese paymasters.

Together with Internet communication, English is the language of trade and has basically replaced French as the language of diplomacy. Why not try to unite Europe under one language, rather than one currency? You know it makes sense.

But than let's face it in the US of A they do not speak a common language after +200 years. I mean Texas, Alabama .... Only half joking, I do see a EU with English as main language and every member to keep their own identity/language in tact.

Jokes aside. We have to take into consideration that Americans and Australians only can express themselves in English, exceptions confirming the rule. And the american and australian members of this forum constitute this minority of course: they are al fluent in Thai.

I red that the educational departments of these countries start to see the problem. Knowing at least one other language would help to activate certain parts of their brains which even might enable them to understand that people in other countries not only speak different, but also have different ways of thinking and feeling, with other words different cultures. I think most Americans think that Iraq people are a kind of Americans living in Iraq who at the first occasion all will convert to freedom fries.

In the present situation it probably will be extremely difficult for the avergae American or Australian to understand that many Europeans even learn the classical languages Latin and Greek, which are not used anymore. I think they would consider it to be a lost of time and energy.

I am not sure, I am not that old, but I think to remember that English got almost halve of the votes, that German got almost thirty procent and Dutch fifteen. The original name of New York was actually "New Amsterdam," it's a shame that the Dutch lost it there. Dutch could have been the leading language of the world. People wouldn't make jokes about the Dutch language like the famous author Mr. James Eckhard did when talking about the Khmer language for instance . He called the Cambodians the "Dutch of Asia." I bet he doesn't know that it's only 35% more that we needed back then and he would have spoken Dutch!

I must say that the US is more aware of the need to learn foreign languages now, German and French is being offered at loads of highschools now.. But somehow they do not learn languages like people in Europe do..

The French will NEVER accept English as the primary language of Europe, even though it clearly IS the primary language of the world already.

Example 1: the French film industry must (by law) make a fixed percentage of films in the French language - they must not make them all in English (which is the only way their industry will make money and survive).

Example 2: Anyone heard a French politician speak English?

It's a big shame and a big financial burden for the running of the EU. I especially love hearing Indian politicians speaking English - some of them speak such perfect English it makes me shake my head in dismay when I hear our wonderful deputy prime minister, John Prescott, utter the gibberish that he thinks is English.

And now certain EU reports are to be made much shorter to save the cost of translating them into the 20 (?) languages needed by the new, "enlarged" EU. So clarity and detail will be lost because we (they - I don't give a ***, I'm in Thailand) can't agree on one language.

Inside the EU the most spoken language, considering the native speakers, is German, there are more native German speakers, than English or French native speakers. Should the relative majority of EU citizen decide on the ONE European language, it might be German.....and not English or French.

Another argument is, who pays for all in the EU - and in that case the answer is again, that the majority are German speakers.

However as a German native speaker myself, I am supposed to learn English and French, as these are the international most used languages for communication.

My passport should be made clearly in English and French and not in German and other 12 or 20 languages....a passport is made for use OUTSIDE of the EU.
