BANGKOK, 17 November 2018 (NNT) - The Bank of Thailand has launched a campaign for low-income earners and elderly persons aged 65 years or over to open savings accounts at banks without fees. 

The central bank issued a statement on the latest savings account service provided by commercial banks, saying that it will help the low-income earners and elderly persons have access to more convenient financial services. 

Under the campaign, the low-income earners and elderly persons aged 65 years or over can open new savings accounts with 16 banks in Thailand without having to pay any fees. There is no minimum requirement for the value of such savings account for which a waiver to ATM fees is also provided. 

The new offer is currently available with 16 banks in Thailand. Holders of state welfare cards are advised to produce them to the banks' staff when requesting to opening such savings accounts.

I was offered 3 rates of card, each has additional benefits like levels of accident insurance etc.

 

Not altruism, as painted, more a sprat to catch a mackerel. They need even the oldest and poorest members of society to have a bank account in order to bring us the dubious benefits of the Cashless Society.

When all farang retirees are forced to keep 800,000 in a Thai bank, they will be able to help more poor Thais.
