U.S. preparing to add Venezuela to terrorism sponsors list - source

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is preparing to add Venezuela to its list of state sponsors of terrorism but no final decision has been made, a person familiar with the deliberations said on Monday.

Adding Venezuela to the list could limit U.S. assistance and impose financial restrictions in a country already suffering from hyperinflation and shortages of food and medicine.

Discussions on the issue have moved forward in recent days with strong lobbying from Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who has long pressed the administration to take a tougher stand against the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, the source said.

The Trump administration has levied several rounds of sanctions against Maduro's Socialist-led government since 2017, accusing it of undermining democracy.

A time frame for a decision on whether to add Venezuela to the list had not yet been determined, the source said.

The four countries currently on the list - North Korea, Iran, Sudan and Syria - have been found to "have repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism."

The Washington Post, which first reported that the Trump administration was considering the designation, said the U.S. State Department had been asking for feedback on the proposed move from various agencies in recent days.

A State Department spokesperson said it "consistently and on an ongoing basis reviews available information and intelligence, from many sources, on possible state-level involvement in terrorism, evaluating all credible, verified, and corroborated information in its entirety."

The White House declined to comment.

Sad how this is used for political purposes.

The guy that runs Venezuela is a cold fish. So there is that.

I remember that during the run-up to the Iraq War a certain party began claiming that not only Iraq but also Cuba was manufacturing biological weapons. After it was pointed out that there was no evidence to support this claim, that he was, in fact, lying, even Republicans didn't back him. The name of this person? John Bolton. Lucky for us he's not in a position to do anything like that again. Oh wait...

"War on terrorism", indeed.

The nation who declared this war metes out more terrorism than any other, sadly.

Seen the number of Ayatollah representatives in Venezuela and other South and Middle American countries, it might be somewhat prudent to be very careful and mistrusting in dealing with those countries.

The Venezuelans are going through hell.  A total basket case if I ever saw one.

True enough. The government is vile. But that doesn't make Venezuela a terrorist nation.

Even in the unlikely event that Venezuela did support the caravan (how does this further that government's interests) what has that got to do with terrorism? Even Trump confessed he had no evidence of terrorists being part of the caravan. Of course, if you're paranoid, you can fear the presence of  terrorists even in a Thanksgiving Day parade.

Here’s an idea how about working together to help them out so they can take care of themselves perhaps make a friend heck they have oil and are closer than the Saudis oh that’s rite Donald can’t line his pockets

Given their leadership, I think Venezuelan government is past being helped. Unless you mean pure charity. That's one ruinous government they got there.
