"Don't use my name in vain!" - Big Joke lets van operator off defamation then gives out his phone number

People have been claiming to know Thailand's most high profile cop to escape arrest or avoid fines.

But a smiling Maj-Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn has said he really doesn't mind so long as people are doing good for the country.

But if they are breaking the law he will come down on them like a ton of bricks.

He has even given out a phone number to contact him personally if people are concerned his name is being used in vain.

Yesterday the man who has been on the news pages virtually every day - sometime many times a day recently - was at traffic police HQ in Bangkok where he met a contrite Aran Somsamai, 40, the owner of Asia Travel Connection Co Ltd.

On Tuesday Phayathai police had stopped one of his drivers called Surasak, 30, who was taking tourists from Pratunam to Suvarnabhumi airport in an illegally registered mini van.

Surasak said that officers should speak to his boss on his mobile. In a conversation Aran claimed that the van and other red plate vehicles were owned by Big Joke and they should leave him alone.

Surachate accepted the owner's wai and apology for mentioning his name erroneously.

He also commented on other cases including one in Prajuab Khiri Khan where police are seeking the arrest of someone who claimed connections to the Maj-Gen.

Big Joke said that he was a high profile figure and mention of his name might scare some low ranking officers into not doing their duty.

But he told Thai Rath that if his name was connected to people doing good for society then there was no problem. But if his name was mentioned in things like drugs cases or criminal activity then they would be arrested for defamation.

Aran was let off defamation charges and just fined 1,000 baht for the matter about his van.

But Big Joke's parting shot was interesting.

He said: "If you suspect my name or that of my team is being used wrongly you can call me on 081 644 0430 or report the matter on the Surachate Hakparn site on Facebook".

1000 baht fine for operating an illegal mini van service and trying to avoid the penalty by falsely claiming connection to the Immigration chief????

Wow, that's some serious justice being dispensed here...  :crying:

BTW, what does the Immigration chief have to do with illegal/unlicensed Thai minivan operations again???

What a funny story. A man breaking the law by having illegally registered vans then makes false claims to try and blackmail some cops into turning a blind eye, is now seen in pictures smiling with police officers as if the crimes he committed mattered not one jot.

Moral of the story? Big Joke is a virtuous and forgiving god police officer.

The man is nothing but a charlatan for trying to trade on Big J's good name in such a fashion .. Everyone knows that if the J done minivans they'd be spotted quite easily ..
