Suicide or accident? "Benjaphaet" man dies at Jomtien beach

A 25 year old man from Chiang Mai was found floating in the sea off Jomtien beach yesterday afternoon.

He was named as Wirapat.

Rescue services spent two hours looking for him and located him dead in the water 300 meters offshore from a restaurant.

There was a phone and wallet in his trouser pockets - Sanook noted that this was not normal for people who went swimming.

At 12.50 he had been seen entering the water. After a swim about 100 meters out he had come out then gone back in the water.

He was seen to raise his hand and shout something indistinct. A windsurf rescue official went to try and find him but failed.

Police could not be sure if he had committed suicide or it was an accidental drowning.

Sanook said in their headline that the man had entered the age of "benjaphaet".

This is when people are 25 and something serious or life changing is likely to happen according to Thai culture.

It's only suicide if it's a farang.

The quality of being stupid or unintelligent.

He committed suicide at the age of 25 is no good.

That didn't take long.

I cant imagine that someone screaming for attention is committing suicide. More likely under the influence and finally realised he was in strife and screamed for help. Raising a hand to gain attention indicates a desire to live unless he was waving goodbye. RIP fella.

He was seen to raise his hand and shout something indistinct........

Could have been.......HELP!
