Dan Bube

Dan Bube, a long time Bangkok resident recently passed away in Oregon. Many of you might have stayed in a hotel or resort that Dan had designed. Dan’s two boys attended the same school my daughter did and that is how we met. He was a good guy and here is his story.

 

Dan was just the opposite of me as he didn’t have any bad habits and was a vegetarian. I rebuild old Thai houses and Dan was an internationally acclaimed architect. He designed places like the Shangri-La and the Banana Island Resort.  

 

I visited his house in Bangkok throughout the years and was amazed every time at something I had not spotted before. His home was recently sold and here is a video of Dan taking us on a tour of the property.

 

We visited his family in the states a few years back and toured parts of Oregon and Washington. Of course on the agenda was a trip to see a house designed by another internationally acclaimed architect. Frank Lloyd Wright.  That is the house shown below.

 

Earlier this year Dan had his recurring back pain examined. He was told that he had Stage 4 Cancer and might have about six months left to live. Dan said that it was really his fault and he should have double-checked. This is what he meant. About five years previously Dan had his back examined by a leading Cancer hospital in Bangkok. The initial tests revealed nothing and the final results were supposed to be emailed to him. They never were and he got busy and forgot. The Cancer continued to grow.

 

The last couple of months, I visited Dan a few times in a clinic in Bangkok.

 

He had tried the conventional means of chemotherapy and was now using alternative means. One morning visit Dan was sitting on a lazy chair with his feet up and a smile on his face. But, he said he felt funny and called the doctor over. The doc told Dan it’s the cannabis in his system and that basically he was stoned.

 

Dan laughed, pointed at me and said “I’m just like you now.” He will be missed…
