BANGKOK — In case there’s any doubt whether the cockroaches creeping into your home are edible, health officials weighed in Wednesday with a reminder: They’re not.

The Bureau of Non-Communicable Diseases today played down the nutritional value of the insects’ shiny brown bodies and hairy legs in a statement warning people against consuming them – at least those that emerge from sewer pipes.

The 'cockroaches' that you may see bargirls (and many other Thais) eating are not cockroaches at all.  They are water beetles and a very popular Thai food especially in Issan.

Don't knock them until you've tried them, they are in fact surprisingly tasty.

They do not eat them alive! Its fried before consumption.I tried more then twice, but I am not fan of it.

Well that ruins my night, I was considering an evening cockroach binge.  Saved by the bell.... ????

I showed this article to the family cats and they don't believe the health officials.

They said that chasing and "playing with" any cockroaches that invade the house is great fun and eventually a crunchy snack.

They should put these signs on Suwarnaphoom as well, now the tourists still don't know that they are inedible...

Which lips do you mean ?

The epitome of "Thainess": eating cockroaches...

Snap crackle pop has more than one meaning at breakfast time????

I tried fried grasshoppers along Walking Street one night, after more than a few brewskies, and found them quite tasty. THEN I tried them again sober, and they were STILL tasty! I thought to myself, "Y'know, they're like little cows. They run around eating grass all day, that can't be bad." Same thing with rats living out in the rice fields.

As I understand it the ones the girls eat are field cockroaches and they are edible. The ones in the cities are sewer cockroaches and should not be eaten. Either way, I pass.
