Thailand pioneers mega events

For the first year, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) is making headway in the promotion of the standard for special-event venues.

Aiming to develop unconventional venues to serve various demands for mega events and international festivals, TCEB targets the number of operators with successful venue certification to reach 20 venues and to move forward to complete the assessment of qualified operators’ performance by December.

Chiruit Isarangkun na Ayuthaya, president of TCEB, said the trend of mega-events and international festivals has been recognised by the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) worldwide for its potentiality to yield economic and social benefits. 

The trend of mega-events or international festivals that attract the attention of organisers and visitors is interesting, as the majority of these events are designed to respond to the new generation’s lifestyle, Chiruit said.  

“Overall, Thailand definitely has the readiness to serve mega-events. An in-depth study was conducted to assess the possibility of Thailand in terms of accommodating world-class mega-events,” Chiruit said.  

"The study pointed out that Thailand has all necessary capabilities to hold experiential events, as well as creative flair to design, lifestyle and music events, because of our potentials, in terms of spaces and event specialists. In addition, Thailand has numerous options of areas with scenic impact, allowing this type of event to continue to earn recognition from target groups, both domestically and internationally.”  

During this financial year, Thailand is due to host up to 17 mega events and international festivals, spanning arts, culture, sports, entertainment and technology, including L'Etape Thailand by Le Tour de France 2018, World Robot Olympiad, Chiang Mai Design Week, Bangkok Art Biennale, Thailand Art Biennale, Bangkok Design Week 2019, Bangkok Entertainment Fest: Bangkok Comicon and Thailand Toy Expo.
