BANGKOK – The Department of Foreign Trade disclosed that Thailand has become the world’s number one exporter of sweet corns and related products for 10 consecutive years.

The Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, Adul Chotinisakorn, said exports of sweet corns and related products during the first 11 months of 2018 amounted to 236,775 tons, an increase of 6.7 percent, worth 7.32 billion baht, up by 2.2 percent, with the highest number of exports to Japan, followed by South Korea and Taiwan.

As a result, Thailand has become the world’s number one exporter of sweet corns and related products for 10 consecutive years because the country has the potential to produce quality sweet corns with a good taste as well as to develop the corn strains.

The climate of Thailand is also suitable for growing sweet corns while major rival countries like France, Hungary and the United States can grow sweet corns only once a year. Although the weather conditions in Vietnam and China are similar to Thailand, their production quality is not up to the standards of the world market.

Either I don't understand something here or this report was prepared by TAT.

A quick search says otherwise.

  2. China (224.9 million metric tons) ...
  3. Brazil (83.0 million metric tons) ...
  4. India (42.3 million metric tons) ...
  5. Argentina (40.0 million metric tons) ...
  6. Ukraine (39.2 million metric tons) ...
  7. Mexico (32.6 million metric tons) ...
  8. Indonesia (19.0 million metric tons) ...

Sweet corn is a type of maize, not all maize is sweet corn (pop corn is also a type of maize). The vast majority of maize production actually goes for animal feed.

I had to look twice too, one doesn't exactly see huge fields of the stuff.

Okay, Crossy alerted me to "sweet" corn as opposed to corn in general. So I narrowed the search down to "sweet" and came up with this. It's still lacking in the fine details but brings Thailand favourably into the picture.

"The global export market for canned sweet corn is increasing annually, from 670,000 tonnes exported in 2010 to 760,000 tonnes last year. Thailand, Hungary, France and the US are the world’s largest exporters of canned sweet corn."

I guess the difference is between production and export.
