Smog crisis: Bangkok 9th worst in world but Chiang Mai not far behind

 

 

Sanook reported that an online pollution index placed Bangkok in ninth position in the world. 

 

But Chiang Mai fared little better - the northern Thai city was also in the red zone in 14th place. 

 

The readings related to the prevalence of 2.5 PM matter and were expressed in micrograms per cubic meter.

 

Bangkok rated 166 and Chiang Mai 152 on the airvisual.com scale at 2.30 pm on Wednesday. 

 

In the purple danger zone were the top three - Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi, all in India.

Yeah, not that bad, 2 amongst top 15 in the country-ranking ...

Still, clearly beaten by India, China too ... you can do better Siam!

I'm surprised Beijing isnt in the top there... During my travels there there was a thick grey 'fog' in the city.

But then again, if you go to 10 diffrent websites about PM2.5 levels, you will have 10 diffrent top 20's. India is always high up there though.

Surprised Mexico City isn't in that list.

 

The smog there a few years ago was far worse than Bangkok.

Looks like whip cracking time everywhere at once???? 

Yeah just go outside and take a look at the gorgeous view of the moutains. Amazing, you can see them. To those of you who piss and moan about the smoke here up and opt for Bangkok and see how it takes you to return to beautiful Chiang Mai.

You don’t see the harmful particles. PM 2.5 and PM 10 are not visible to the eye, just as we can’t see bacteria.

 

Visible smoke and haze are not PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles.

 

So you can clearly see the mountains while breathing in incredibly harmful air.

At the rate they are going and the total lack of law enforcement in Thailand, I have no doubt you’ll see India levels of pollution here in the future.

So why are all the pics i the news from Bangkok showing smoke, smog etc. ?

No need to worry anymore. The PM has vowed action! OK, let me try to make an attempt to interpret his statements. I believe what he is saying is:

 

I will pray for the pollution to disappear, in much the same way I prayed for the recent typhoon to weaken, which as you all know, it did, due to my efforts. I have a personal connection, and can use my tremendous power and focus, to attract the attention of the elements. I hold sway over the land, the sea, and the air, so when I ask, it gets done. This is real, people, and all the people of Thailand must believe this. They must know who they are dealing with. I am no ordinary man. I make things happen. I have no limits. I am all powerful. Besides, when the population becomes aware of my powers, they might have more of an inclination to vote me back in!

Is this the latest  News Fad, it was only focused on recently in BKK, CMs long been a column filler.

Some PM 10 is visible. Most PM 2.5 is not. Scientists classify particulate matter by size. They call particulate matter “coarse” or “PM10” if the particle has a diameter between 2.5 micrometers and 10 micrometers. (For reference, a human hair is between 50 and 70 micrometers thick.) Dust and smoke are visible examples of PM10, but more than 90 percent of particulate matter isn’t visible to the naked eye. We call these substances “fine particulate matter” or “PM2.5.” The particles have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers, which means they can only be seen underneath a microscope. There you have it. Just waging a battle against diesel cars and trucks, their sale, and their emissions, along with cane burning alone, would probably ease the crisis gripping this nation. Thailand is pushing diesel vehicles like they are the best thing since sliced toast. There are few things more harmful to our environment that a diesel car, pickup or truck.

It's a plot to get more Chinese tourists to BKK and CM. Terraforming for their impending invasion.

If they can no longer drown the zero baht tourists, suffocate them. 

ppl the results are much worse than listed. everyone should go buy a pm2.5 meter to stick it to the man. i got one. Kanchanburi where i am blows all those to number1!!

Funny isn't it:  for years Chiang Mai has had 3 months of pollution, and no one wants to do anything.  Now BKK has the same problem and everyone is complaining.

Chinese cities had the same problem, but fixed it mainly by banning diesel.   All trucks, buses, pickups must run on LNG.  No excuses.  99% of motorbikes are electric.  No smoking tuk-tuks

You either do something or just keep moaning.

Smog has become a whining feast for those who don't own a car, it seems. Well blast away but don't inhale (the results of the Cambodian field fires).

I think you'll find that the haze/smog is in part composed of particulate matter along with other nasties like nitrogen dioxide. The same applies to bacteria which you say we can't see. True you can't see one with the naked eye but ......

Yes, you’re absolutely right. It’s all nasty stuff, with the most harmful being the smallest particles that we generally don’t see.
