PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-Cha yesterday launched “Asean Cultural Year 2019” at Government House, as Thailand takes its turn chairing the 10-member regional grouping.

Artists from Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia showcased regional diversity with performances that offered a glimpse of this year’s theme – “Asean: Oneness to the World”.

“We [Thailand] are very grateful and honoured to chair the Asean Summit this year. We, Asean, will strengthen our cooperation under the ‘3Ms’ strategy – mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual benefit – to achieve this year’s goal of ‘Advancing Partnership for Sustainability’,” Prayut said in his opening speech.

“Moreover, we will turn our cultural diversity into creative industry and turn our region into Asean 4.0,” he added.

Thailand will also promote cultural cooperation among Asean members, as well as hold Asean roadshows in Europe and China.

Representatives from Asean member states and international diplomats joined the launch in Bangkok, kicking off a year-long exhibition of cultural events in the Thai capital.

Presented by the Culture Ministry, among the highlights are a trailer of the new animated film “Rama Avatar”, an “Asean Street Food” exhibition, the “Asean Puppet Festival” and the “Asean Film Festival”, as well as “Asean Heritage: The World Heritage”.

At the launch, Prayut also presented English- language book “Vivid Asean” to representatives from around the region.

While reviewing the musical performances, the junta leader – who has released seven of his own songs during his five-year rule – showed off his musical talent by playing the ranad ek (Thai xylophone) and singing a song.

The Asean Cultural Year is Thailand’s “soft-power” push to boost economic and political solidarity in the region as it seeks trade leverage with the rest of the world.

'Soft-power'? That's nowhere near the way you could describe Prayut's attitude to power or anything,

Using the word 'culture' just makes it synonymous with a bowl of yoghurt.

More irony there, given that English is Asean's officially-declared language of communication between member countries, and not only the PM's lack of English skill, but his self-declared claim Thai would be an international language of communication.

Usurped power.

Thailand has little interest of anything outside of Thailand.  Lived not far from the Thai border in Malaysia.  In over a year, I saw two cars with Thai license plates.  The only Thai people I would see on occasion were lady boys.  Its Thailand's turn so ......

Given their recent history of boating disaster this was probably not a good choice of words.

Yeah it should be "knocking on heavens door" with millions chanting a new background line "open up and let him in".

Are you sure you've got the destination correct?

I'd have thought it was more likely to be Highway To Hell. That. or The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

With Thailand's detention of UN refugee AlAraibi in response to Baharin's extradition request the title should read:

Prayut sinks ‘Asean Cultural Year’ with Thailand at helm

It's hard to see Prayut and culture in the same room let alone for all of Asia, just where this will lead to is anybody's guess , perhaps flowered powered Chinese tanks or maybe  pastel blue submarines.

Puppet show very appropriate given the big puppet in the middle

Of course! This is what Thailand is good at. Eating, dancing and other useless "cultural" stuff. No appetite or aptitude to deal with real issues. Issues are hard. "mai sanuk"

In ASEAN, the power brokers are nearly all Chinese anyway. They just speak different languages. They will all get along quite nicely and share stories about how funny the "locals" are.

Nobody in Thailand knows what Rendang is.

It's a Indo/Malay herbmix (from natural herbs) and tastes absolutely fantastic...

I wished i could eat it in BKK like everywhere in Singapore.

Satay lilit, satay made from ground coconut/fish/prawn with herbs....try that if you''re on Bali.

What does “ASEAN Cultural Year “ mean ? It’s just a slogan andmeans nothing as does ASEAN ! Just a chance for politicians to get together for photo ops !
