A Thai hotel worker who claimed he was attacked in an early morning robbery at Chiang Mai's Airport Resident hotel made it all up.

Yossakorn Detdiawying had racked up online gambling debts and needed money. So he slashed his own arm with a knife then took 35,000 baht and hid it in an upstairs locker.

He then told investigators that three men had come into the hotel, attacked him and ransacked the reception and offices.

They had then fled on a motorcycle down Mahidol Road with cash and the CCTV server, he had claimed.

Daily News praised good police work led by deputy provincial chief Pol Col Piyaphan Phatrapongsin.

Pol ColPiyaphan said that CCTV in the area revealed there were no robbers. In addition Yossakorn kept changing his story and suspicions quickly arose.

He was pressured in interrogation and finally cracked admitting he stole the money himself to pay online gambling debts.

He has been charged with making false statements to police and theft.

Thai poverty is starting to affect many people, just look at some of the top resorts with bars & restaurants empty, expect many more such incidents & robbery as Thais start to suffer.

This was nothing to do with what you describe as "Thai poverty".
