I promised to inform those of the outcome who were kind enough to advise me on how to overcome 'No sound device' on my laptop. Now back in NZ on another visit to my family, my daughter got her company whizzkid to look at the problem. He did this by remote control using 'Teamviewer.' The result was that it was hard drive damage. He sent me a USB stick '3D Sound' and bingo! Sound loud and clear. Thanks to those who offered advice and maybe my experience might help others.
