Preah Sihanouk provincial police and relevant authorities released a first census on foreign residents on Thursday, which showed that foreigners in the province had shown a strong increase in recent years.

 

The report’s findings were released at a meeting led by the Interior Ministry’s General Department of Immigration director-general Kirth Chantharith and provincial governor Yun Min on Wednesday.

 

Chantharith said it was the first census for foreigners who are living and working in, and visiting the area.

Was once not a bad little place....now, as I understand from friends who live there, completely over-run with Chinese..

Almost all building over 2/3 floors is done by Chinese building companies

Yeah, the article says they visited 418 residences and counted 13,859 foreigners.

 

Of that number, 12,454 were Chinese. The remaining 1,405 must have been made up of the other 29 nationalities they said were present.

 

Odd - I thought all the "old, white" foreigners from Thailand were all moving to Cambodia in droves (for the last 10+ years now at least). I remember over a decade ago people were clamouring about S'ville being the "new" Pattaya, or being like Pattaya was back in the late 70s/early 80s at least. Everyone was going to move there and get in "before the boom". 

 

Probably the same BS as all the current "old white" foreigners that keep claiming they are fed up with Thailand (again) and are moving to Cambodia (again).

Sound a lot like Thailand ? As some would say - same shi* - different pile.

So let me get this right.. Out of a total of 13,859 foreigners, 90% are Chinese!! 

 

And the other 1405 foreigners are from 29 other nationalities, averaging less than 50 per nationality.. OMG.. 

 

Tourism must really be suffering at the moment.. 

Last time I looked, the once-quiet little seaside town had sprouted 40 casinos, with another 60 in the pipeline.

 

And we all know how much the Chinese love a flutter.

 

How long will it be, one wonders, before Government House wakes up the potential profits which would flow from revising the Kingdom's draconian gambling laws and committing to the Silk Road?

 

The trick, of course, would be to ensure that - unlike in Sihanoukville - the new casinos are Thai owned and run to benefit the domestic economy.

I was there about 5 years ago on a visa run and it was the Russians that controlled the place. Only counted 6 casinos back then. Do not think I will go back now.

If you feel tempted, I recommend you first do a quick YouTube search on Chinese in Sihanoukville

or something similar. Unbelievable.

Between December 16 last year and January 15 this year, the authorities visited 418 residences in the province, counting 13,859 foreigners (of which 2,896 were female), from 30 nationalities. Of them, Chinese nationals comprised the vast majority, with 12,454 living and working in the province.

 

So they found an average of 33+ foreigners per residence?

If this is the first census how do they know that numbers have increased?

I dislike most places in Cambodia but Sihanoukville was somewhat bearable.

I live in Cambodia  in Sville dec now more than 140 casinos. and 40000 chinese
