Swede run over by 10-wheel truck

KARON: A Swedish man was killed instantly on Patak Rd on Friday afternoon after he fell off his motorbike and was run over by a 10-wheel truck.

Tommy Leif Jonsson, 50, was driving a dark blue Yamaha Nouvo motorcycle over the hills between Kata and Chalong when he apparently lost control and fell off his vehicle near the Plub Pla Resort, Lt Col Anek Mongkol of the Chalong Police told the Gazette.

The driver of a 10-wheel truck following him failed to notice the fallen Swede, who was killed instantly when his skull was crushed and both legs broken.

The driver of the truck, 29-year-old Suwanchai Karnprakob, fled the scene in the vehicle, said police.

He was later arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter, and released without bail.

According to police, Jonsson was returning to his bungalow in Karon from Chalong Police Station when the accident occurred.

He went to the police station to report a motorbike accident he had just two days before in the hope of having his hospital fee for that accident covered by his insurance.

Yeah, doesn't make much sense. If you fled the scene, wouldn't you naturally be a flight risk. Either he did something wrong to want to flee or he has such little confidence in the way he would be treated by the judicial system that he figured it was best to run. I would lean toward believing the latter.

Anyhow, condolences to Swedish man's family.

The hill is scarey covered in spilt fuel and ridges of solid concrete from the lorries no wonder they blow the horn for Buda at the top :o

Condolances to the family..

1. Have Accident.

2. Pull Runner.

3. Get Bail.

4. Beat The Rap.

5. Karaoke Party.

A lot of people flee the accident for their own safety. It's not unusual for bystanders to beat the living B-Jesus out of a driver. If you notice, most of them flee, but they go home and wait for the police.

I've seen an accident where a motorcycle taxi driver ran into the side of car--the accident was clearly the motorcyclists fault. The driver stopped and got a severe beating from the other taxi drivers. Enough that he ended up being taken to hospital by ambulance.

I don't know the particulars here, but take care when facing street justice.

This story illustrates why Thai insurance companies do not cover anyone who drives a motorcycle.

Ironic that he was returning from reporting a different accident/

RIP Mr Swede

Think about it..there is no real penalty for committing a hit and run so if your chances are roughly 50/50 to get away with it then I think a lot of Thai drivers would go for it. T.I.T.
