The World Cup Was A Great Success Until THAT Happened.

Featured Replies

I detest Trump for a variety of reasons, and now he's given me one more. Despite the grave misgivings I, and many, many more, had going into this WC ( ICE, the visa issues, a top referee turned away, the treatment of the Iranian team etc.) the WC was turning into a great success, bringing people from all over the world together, including lots of Americans, many of who seemed to develop an interest in, and an enjoyment of, the beautiful game.

Partly, this was because of an American side that played with passion and a reasonable level of proficiency. They were never gonna win it, but given the lack of serious opposition in the group stages, they were always gonna qualify for the knock-out stages and if lucky, maybe get to the round of 16, or even the quarter finals.

People seemed to be having the time of their lives, in Boston, Seattle, Dallas, San Fransisco, New York, up in Canada and down in Mexico, really connecting and realizing "yeah, maybe most of these people aren't so bad after all."

Then disaster struck. The US' top goalscorer, ironically a "birthright citizen", got red-carded (whether correctly/incorrectly is irrelevant) and the rules are clear. A red card means you're ineligible for the next game. Simple as that, no ifs or buts about it.

So trump decided to head for the china shop. He made a call to his good buddy Infantino, the corrupt snake that is the head of FIFA, and in an unprecedented move the one match ban got suspended by one year.

And of course, trump being trump, he started bragging about it, and the whole world of football started raging on him and FIFA which spilled over on to the USMNT, something that was totally undeserved but unfortunately inevitable.

And so, in the US' next and last game they met a properly peed off and extremely motivated Belgian team who was out for blood, playing against an American side that seemed a bit deflated, and with their star striker, the guy at the centre of the whole controversy, to his credit played like he knew he wasn't supposed to be there.

The US was headed for a big win, showcasing another, better side of the US that many people, myself included, sometimes forget exists. And then Donald happened.

Sad.

Then Belgium happened and the US was obliterated, destroyed, buried, annihilated, smashed and beaten.

Let's not hold a grudge.

not surprised, wouldn't expected anything else from you

I don’t get involved in politics in any country or generally comment on politicians but I would say that idiots interference completely embarrassed your country. He should have stayed well out of it. I actually believe he affected the team performance as up until that point the US were playing ok.

Karma has been served the US team had their ass*s handed to them.

Ignoring trump is about as easy as ignoring your neighbour's incessantly barking dog.
