Couple arrested for allegedly defrauding 19 people out of Bt16m

A couple have been arrested for allegedly deceiving 19 people into investing a total of Bt16.8 million with promises of high monthly returns, and later ceasing payments to the investors after just three months.

Police on Monday named the pair as Rattapol Wannupatham and Ratanaporn On-uthai.

Pol Lt-General Surachate Hakpal, Immigration Police chief who also heads the economic crime suppression centre, said the couple had initially gained investor trust with a money-pooling fund that allowed members to take turns to get funds every five days.

Later, they allegedly lured 19 of those individuals into investing a combined Bt16.8 million with an unidentified investor, saying they would each get 21-per-cent interest per month as a return.

However, the victims received the interest for only the first three months, after which Rattapol and Ratanaporn ceased paying out.

The couple initially told the 19 victims that they were trying to get back their invest amounts from the unnamed investor.

But they failed to return the investment capital to them, and reportedly admitted that there was no such investor and they had spent the money.

The victims later filed a complaint with police.

Was it "greed meets stupidity weeks" again?

Has anyone else noticed the headline does not say "Two Thai Nationals Arrested For Fraud".

Maybe it is because of the remark made by the Police General that Thai's do not cheat each other.

No photos either, yet if it was two Farangs their pictures would be splattered all over the page with at least 16 cops in the picture ( Big Joke leaning over them of course), Along with copies of passports, height, weight, inside leg measurement, what they had fro breakfast, Mother's maiden name...........

Not quite sure the banks will be happy with the police board advertisement

Keep this low key no dark skins no farangs just your run of the mill home grown scammers????

I am telling you, the company that prints up those billboard-sized graphics for the police press conferences is killing it.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Zero sympathy for these dumb-asses.

So after 3 months they've managed to spend all the money????????????????.give them 10 years each and then it'll soon be found.

Thai's don't do that.............

Waste of police time.... fools and their money will typically part ways. Save the police effort for real crimes like driving on sidewalks, loud outside after hours karaoke bars, and other pressing problems.

21% return....I want in on the action

Or... maybe because they are the people here by default?

News in Canada wouldn't read "Canadian Couple Caught in Fraud Scheme" either.
