The disappearance of political activist Surachai Danwattananusorn and the murder of his two close aides has prompted concern from United Nations officials in Thailand, according to Surachai’s wife.

The disappearance of political activist Surachai Danwattananusorn and the murder of his two close aides has prompted concern from United Nations officials in Thailand, according to Surachai’s wife.

Pranee Danwattananusorn, whose husband Surachai is believed to have been killed following his disappearance in Laos, said on Tuesday that UN officials would call on Tha Uthen police station in Nakhon Phanom on Monday and Tuesday next week to ask about progress in the investigation.

Earlier this week, Pranee and her lawyer requested Tha Uthen police station to investigate a social-media report that a third body had been found in the Mekong River in late December.

The two bodies retrieved at the time were identified as Surachai's close aides, Chatcharn Buppawan and Kraidej Luelert. The two men had lived in self-exile with Surachai, who was wanted in Thailand for lese majeste. They were last seen alive together on December 12.

Pranee said she believed Surachai, 77, was the third body that witnesses say they spotted.

She said that at a police friend's suggestion, she was also considering filing separate complaints with the Crime Suppression Division and the Department of Special Investigation regarding his disappearance and possible murder.

Police Colonel Natee Siriworawat, superintendent of Nakhon Phanom's Tha Uthen police station, said on Tuesday that police had never been alerted about a third body in the Mekong River at that time.

UN officials in Thailand! are they on holiday?

  • Popular Post

Back in 2002, I spent a week in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

I staggered into a bar near Sharkeys Bar.

It was full of UN workers who were supposed to be organising the destruction of land mines.

They admitted to being totally ineffective. Not one mine had been cleared by them, rather the non UN sponsored volunteers.

UN is a money grasping organisation. Totally ineffective, totally corrupt. Totally useless

The UN is made up mainly of petty dictatorships whose main job it is to self promote and steal.

I will add an addition. Some time around 2008, I went to Sri Lanka. Beautiful country.

I met some UN workers in a bar (of course). They had returned from a village in Southern India.

Their mission was to build public toilets and wells for the populace.

But, they built toilets in the headman and his cronies houses along with wells.

Such is the UN. totally inept, totally ineffective, totally scam.

Totally agree. I met two young Irish guys in a BKK bar. . . What you do boys? Work for the UN here in BKK. What do you do? Nothing. Nothing? Nothing. We arrived 6 months ago and go work most mornings at 10am. Drink coffee, play computer games and go home at 4.30pm. But you must have a job title at least? Nope.

The UN, a dream job. Fat salary, fat expense account with everything first class, and do nothing. Keep your nose clean and don't rock the boat.

I have attended and spoken at conferences supported by the UN in Thailand and Malaysia.

I have to agree with your assessment - spot on!

Only caveat is you have to be over qualified, and most important politically correct.

This is a continuing problem and occupational hazard if you are into activism big time in any country with a track record that is lower than a flies guts, , depending on the type of activism you could just disappear or wake up dead there's  plenty of proof out there, this then helps keep mouths. shut.

I guess they are cleaning up the last commies from the 70's.

Yup, if you get a staff position. Basically set for life. Just don't get stuck somewhere in the middle of Africa.

I was touring in Vietnam in the late 90's.

Our tour group had an enforced guide, who was appointed to make sure we saw nothing and talked to no locals.

At the time a plane load of old generals and political persons disappeared on route to some Com Fest in Laos.

The tour guide was a pretty lass who was quite shy. I said she must be sorry about this plane crash.

Plane crash? No, they shoot it down. Of course we all sat up. Who shot it down?  No more talk she said.

I don't know if it is true or not but they appear not to want these old hangovers from the Cold War around anymore

Of course the UN would be incensed a fellow Communist had such a thing happen to them.
