Thai industry declares war on plastic pollution with ‘unprecedented’ public-private effort.

Falling annually on June 5, the day carried the theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution” this year.

“All government agencies under the 20 ministries will set examples for others to follow. They will reduce their use of plastic bags and foam containers,” Natural Resources and Environment Minister General Surasak Karnjanarat said yesterday. He said ministries would pursue tangible results so as to encourage all other sectors to halt their unnecessary use of plastic. The government had declared waste management a national agenda, Surasak added.

The move follows Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s April 17 order for the ministries of the Interior, and Natural Resources and Environment to campaign for reduced use of plastic.

In the article, it states:

In an effort to tackle the problem for the next five years, the Plastic Industry Club, the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development, and the Thailand Environment Institute Foundation yesterday launched the “Public Private Partnership for Sustainable Plastic and Waste Management”.

Such initiatives or partnerships would usually have an annual report. Is there anyone who knows where to find a report on their progress? I tried finding it through the Federation of Thai Industries website but it doesn't seem to have any sort of reports/publication on their own projects. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Why does everyone want the government to do something?

Why don't all the people moaning just get off their dead butts and go pick up some trash?

Both your replies to this thread are completely pointless to the extent that I'm convinced you're trolling. These 2 videos should explain to you WHY simply picking a bit of plastic here and there from the street is nowhere near enough to undo the damage that is being done.

The war on Plastic waste was just a publicity stunt. A charade intended to dupe international audiences into believing that efforts are actually being made to curb plastic waste. They abandoned the project almost immediately after starting it as the spotlight was no longer on them. There is no governing body supervising that the "War On Plastic Waste" promises are fulfilled. Most local Thai people don't really care about the abundance plastic waste. They certainly wouldn't bother changing their daily habits in order to reduce the amount of plastic waste they generate.

It's unfortunate but I'm forced to agree with you. Thailand has no intention on stopping the insane amounts of pollution and plastic they are dumping into the sea. Any official claims to the contrary should be assumed to be false.

Yes, you seem easily convinced. You're convinced you can't do anything to help, so you'll just moan on about others.

I recycle virtually all my waste, and I pick up a fair amount of rubbish. Since I've started, a few other others in and around my home have joined in.

But clearly, your moaning is helping a lot more.

I can't speak for other people but I wasn't moaning. I asked a question to do with what the Thai government promised to do, which was to try and dramatically reduce plastic wastage in Thailand. I wanted to know if there were any sights to provide information on their progress. Your response was "Yes, if one exists, there is someone who knows where to find it." which was not helpful. I didn't say we needed to rely on the government. I just wanted to know how they are progressing with the promises they made publicly.

Could someone tell me if what Cindykaty said is true? Is there any evidence to this?

Actually, I responded twice, and I think if more people took it upon themselves to do something, a lot more would get done.

The government can't do anything without us.

Well, today was paper-bag day at Lotus, I guess someone is trying to do something.

Gets quiet in here when you start talking about what people can do themselves to help...

This plastic problem is particularly difficult problem to solve because it involves the attitude of the general public.

Do they care? Are they selfish? A certain number of the population do not even understand how bad plastic is for the environment.  They cannot imagine the problem even if you explain to them. Some of these people are so poor does it matter to them if plastic waste cause problems, their concern is very much on money.

The educated section of the population the office workers etc., do they make an effort to reduce the usage of plastic? If it is too much of a hassle then they don't care either. It's an attitude problem.

I also went to Tesco yesterday, no bags of any description at the check-out, however, I needed potatoes and the veg section have cut the size of their bags by about half, so used three bags when one would have been enough. I know, I should have brought my own bags, but how many stop to think "Oh, no bag day at Tesco, must bring my own"?

Or you could just take your own bags every time you go and be part of the solution.
